Re: Is Roundup as safe as we have been told?

I've been using a grass killer for years. It'll hurt some things but leaves most dicots alone.

    Re: Huge wasp attacking bees

I use yellow jacket traps with meat in them. The meat attracts the yellow jackets, which are my biggest problem, and they also attract the large predatory wasps. It doesn't attract bees nor does it...

Re: What Kind of Bee is this?

I'm fairly certain that's a leaf cutter bee. I get quite a few of them up here.

  4. Re: Denver area beeks - how does your honey production look for 2014?

I got two medium supers mostly full on one hive and one super full on another. The other three hives are new this year, but they filled two deeps each so are good for the winter.

Re: Denver area honey color in 2014

Thanks so much for the replies from Colorado!

I was cleaning the last bit of the honey from the buckets with my finger and found it really had a good lasting honey taste. :)

Re: Denver area honey color in 2014

Yes, we had huge fields of it nearby. I only ever see this when we get good summer rains and the last time I saw good summer rains and lots of yellow clover was years before I had bees.

Re: Denver area honey color in 2014

I thought about that since it is the same color as sugar honey, but my spouse says it's doesn't taste like sugar honey. We fed the bees a lot during our first year and took some of that honey off....

Denver area honey color in 2014

I just got done bottling up this years honey from my hives and it's the lightest colored honey I've ever seen. Some years it's very dark.
I'd heard from one other beekeeper that he was seeing light...

    Re: Colorado native bee identification

It could be Hunt's Bumble Bee, which are common in Colorado. There's lots of them in my yard.

I haven't paid attention to the exact times, but I know the bees do the squash in the morning and are done sometime in the afternoon, if not earlier. They may even finish in the morning.

I've seen honeybees try to pollinate squash, but they were chased off by the native squash bees. My squash and other cucurbit flowers are often full of these bees.

Re: bee pond a mosquito haven

I agree with the above. Mosquito dunks are safe for bees. The dunks are only deadly for mosquito larva and some closely related species such as fungus gnats.

Re: Collecting cool apiary photos - care to add?

When I looked at Barry's photo on Photobucket and enlarged it to full size, I saw bees in entrances. But I would have thought I would see more.
  20. Re: State suspends pesticide operator's license after bee deaths

Aphids are fragile and blasting with plain water will do much to get rid of them. I use this method on my 400+ roses. Unfortunately the aphids also reproduce incredibly fast so it has to be repeated.

Around here I've seen queens go for $20 to $29 - open mated.

    Re: Help Identifying this bee?
