    Re: Concerns about SHB

I'd have to agree with all the replies.
On a side note concerning SHB, there was an interesting article by Dr. Magnum in the last edition of ABJ. I did not know this, but SHB will beg for food from...

Re: Cutout in Smith County, TN

You should have been with me this afternoon. One hive in particular did not like me pulling their honey off of them. I think I walked away with 4 stings and no telling how many stingers in my suit...

Re: Cutout in Smith County, TN

Between helping other fellow Beekeepers and extracting honey, I just can't find time! ;)
  4. Re: Bee Removal, Frisco Texas (preston and Eldorado)

Got a call this evening about a colony in an old house in Carthage, TN that is about to be torn down. Needs to be done by Tuesday. Contact is Joey Bowman 6154187027. I don't have the time for this...

    Cutout in Smith County, TN

A contractor called me this evening about a beehive in an old house that is about to be torn down in Carthage. It needs to be done by Tuesday. I do not have the time to do it. If you are interested,...

    Re: commercial level TF

Perhaps I stand corrected as to Tennessee being the only one to post results. I did NOT say that he was the only honest one however. I am not a cult follower on Beesource and should not have used an...

    Re: commercial level TF

There is a lot of truth in this thread, as well as idealistic propaganda. Tennessee is the only one so far that I've seen on this forum who has actually posted his productivity with TF colonies. He...
  8. Re: Caging Queens to Induce a Brood Break: pre Mite Treatment

Letting her go at day 14 will allow her to start laying again so that the colony can start to regain population. After day 6 of letting her go (which is also day 20-21 from first caging her) there...
  9. Caging Queens to Induce a Brood Break: pre Mite Treatment

How have YOU done this? What kind of cage/cages do YOU use? Will a two week period of being caged negatively affect the queen's laying ability?
My goal is to let all of the capped brood hatch...

Re: What is chewing on my hive?

I couldn't stand it any longer. I'm going to say that it's a raccoon. It's too high for a skunk. A possum isn't that tenacious. Wood peckers don't shred wood unless it is rotten (usually).
    The...

Re: I'm Thinking EFB Please Confirm

If it is indeed EFB, don't beat yourself up too bad. A good honey flow could clear it up, but Requeening is almost a sure fire way to take care of it for good. It could be worse....

    Re: Comb building

I have had large swarms fully draw out 16 deep frames in 3 weeks. I caught a large swarm 4 days ago, and they are now on their 5th deep frame. Magic happens when you keep em fat and happy. :)

    Re: Cheapest effective swarm trap?

I've had similar experiences. I have another thread started for this very subject so we don't high Jack this one.
As far as cheap traps go, free is best! :)
  16. Re: Swarms: pheromones, lay lines, weather conditions, oddities, and unique occurence

I have a place where I have caught 5 large swarms in the past year. There IS a colony in the home of whose place I'm trapping on. However, I know that 3 of the swarms I caught were not from the...
  17. Swarms: pheromones, lay lines, weather conditions, oddities, and unique occurences

Some observations and neat stories were in another thread. I don't think a thread like this has been started yet. So, instead of high jacking that one, I started this one.
    This thread is simply for...

    Re: Cheapest effective swarm trap?

Well, the cat is finally out of the bag! I thought no one was going to say it.
I've been conducting a study with neon lights (don't laugh, I'm serious). I found a supplier who makes custom signs...

When was the last time you fully inspected them and what did their food stores look like (both nectar and pollen)?
  21. Re: Since 1980 this is the worst April Non-flow I have every seen...

Tell me about it. It's the same way here UT. Two weeks ago the bees were booming and bursting at the seems with plenty of nectar and plenty of pollen. Populations were going gangbusters. Now, after a...

Re: Small Hive Beetles and Swarms

    Ok, point taken.
Survival aside, how do small hive beetles detect that a swarm is being issued?

Re: Small Hive Beetles and Swarms

Would it really double the survival if the parent colony becomes weaker due to less bees? Just think, all that pollen and honey stored away in a large amount of comb unattended by the bees. It seems...

    Small Hive Beetles and Swarms

Ok, so I'm fairly sure that most of us know that SHB can and will fly with the swarm once it issues. Obviously the SHB can detect the bees while flying whether by pheromone, smell, frequency of wing...

    Re: Scout Bees

This has become one of the working philosophies of my life!
I'd have to agree with just about everything I've read in this thread. There is clearly competition among colonies for new nest sites,...
