This morning :
I put some foundationless frames in a couple supers of 2 hives this summer for the sole reason of taking some natural comb honey in the fall.
Well the queens evidently needed that space for brood...
Turkey feather here.
Bees in Maine were flying yesterday. Temps in the upper 30s.
Potty flights, house cleaning.
By the looks of the spotted snow they must be relieved.
Was nice to see some activity after a couple...
Started not started on :D Did start on some applejack i made from hard cider .
For newbee mead makers like me it is probably better to start with gallon batches
until you get any bugs...
And once three is up you will see 4, once 4 is up you will see 5. The last one is fairly short.
I thoroughly enjoyed the videos also and will probably
watch them again.
Series of videos on brother Adam very well done.
I did a quick search and didn't see where anyone had posted this.
20 below zero last night, high of 5*F today. Been rough sledding lately,
not only cold but wind blew everything off that wasn't tied down.
Glad i put in a windbreak for the hives, might just save...
You should heat the honey enough so it is fluid and will dissolve
in water easily.
There is a recipe here for mead
with bread yeast called JAOM, Joes ancient orange mead.
With bread yeast you...
Got Mountaincamp style sugar feed on my 2 hives today.
Don't think they need it yet but temps should be dropping off cold any day now so good time to do it. Was 40 again today. Expecting near 0 in a...
Thanks, how many lbs of sugar(roughly) should i put on each
8 frame hive ? Will probably give it another go tomorrow.
I was going to do the mountaincamp feed today but when i popped the inner cover there were a lot of bees roaming around on the top bars so closed them up and decided to wait until they are more...
Hear, hear !
I'm the only one who uses a stout Turkey feather to brush the bees off ?
Well it was free, found it in the yard !
Mostly brown here too. Bumblebees are all that i see working anything today so far.
Drones getting the boot big time now.
Is it over ? Any nectar producing flowers survive frosty nights ? Asters is about all
we have left going on here i think.
Had almost 2 med .frames worth that i set out on top a lumber pile about 60' from the hives and see some dead bees around it. So they may kill one another over it .
I can see why you wouldn't want...
Does this create any problems amongst the bees from multiple hives ?
I started beekeeping last year with all mediums which worked well when buying package bees.
This year , after losing both package colonies last winter i bought 2 nucs which came with deep frames so...
Apparently some of the folks down under seem to like it.
Tried some today, once you get by the color it is quite tasty. ;)
I put a couple of empty frames in a medium super this summer for the sake of harvesting some natural cut comb honey this fall and it seems the queen moved
up into them and used them for brood....
The bearding party broke up and went foraging mid morning. They are in the Asters now. Not quite 60s today. Plenty of Asters here on the property. Field is abuzz.
Welcome aboard !
What does it mean , overcrowded hive ?
I've never seen the Aster crop here so heavy before.
Might be because i've changed my mowing habits to benefit the bees.
Also got a stinging warning yesterday upon approaching the hives...
