Re: Burr Comb on Queen Grafts

I'll have to measure more accurately in the morning, but its just a normal frame with 3 upside-down bottom bars, with about 2 inches of space between each one.

    Burr Comb on Queen Grafts

I've just begun experimenting with grafting for the first time this year. Have good acceptance rate. Only problem is after they cap them, they start building burr comb, completely covering the cells...

    Re: Summer Feeding

My question is, for those of you that feed while honey supers on, how do you keep the syrup out of your honey. Saw someone doing it this year. Honey supers stacked to the sky while feeding syrup.

Re: How long to forget hive location

An individual bee will remember a hive location for its lifetime, but still has the capability of reorienting to a new one. Three weeks sounds sufficient as others have said. An overwintered bee...
  7. Re: Book Choice: ABC and XYZ of Bee Culture, or Hive and the Honey Bee

The hive and the honey bee would be 1/2 its size if not for references.

I prefer ABC and XYZ. Both are good books.
  8. Re: Feeding and crowding to help draw foundation?

A queen and young larvae stimulate a hive to draw new comb. Why would you want to remove them?

    Does honey color/moisture equalize.

If i put two different honeys in a drum, how long would it take for the color and moisture to equalize through-out the drum. Should i stir it before i send someone a sample.

Re: Bees not drawing out foundations

Try adding a bait frame of either unsealed honey or larvae. Queenless hives, or hives getting ready to swarm do not usually draw new comb. They also need a nectar flow, or could be using all...

  12. Re: Florida’s managed bee colonies have increased by more than 145 percent in the las

I read on the national honey report last year that even with the rapid colony increases in Florida, honey production has remained the same for the state.

Re: Titi or swamp cyrilla as nectar source

Summer titi in full bloom here. Bees are apparently working it, as most of my hives have purple brood to prove it.

    Re: Plastic foundation issues.

Reluctance to draw plasticell can also cause swarming, and definitely limits honey production in some hives. As much as i hate the stuff, i still use it.

Re: How close to have beeyards?

In my experience, it takes at least 1.5 miles to make any considerable difference in foraging activity. If you're in crop country it can also mean the difference in getting hit with pesticides.

    Sweetbay (magnolia virginiana)

I call it sweetbay. Some might know it by the name silver bay. Is it a nectar source for honeybees? It bloomed really well here in NW Florida this year

  23. Re: With no mouths to feed , honey is simply increased !

Colony populations usually die back at the end of the season. That in combination with increasing pest numbers, would make it unwise to kill queens just before a time of year where fresh young bees...
