Re: New package installed, acting aggressive!

It isn't clear from yuor post if you've actually inspected the hive.

I would suit up and see if your queen's ok.

You also might check the hive entrance to see if there are signs of skunks, etc....

Re: Ok let me get this straight

    Howdy,

Conventional wisdom suggests not feeding honey to bees unless you're refeeding it to a hive you've taken it from. This is to minimize the risk of spreading disease - particularly American...

    Re: alternative bee picture

My understanding is that Orchard Mason Bees collect pollen on their abdomens.

You photo reminds me somewhat of the Miner Bees we have around here, although it's a little darker than I'm accustomed...

Re: Lots of Bees at the Entrance

My guess, at that temperature, is that they're out fanning the entrance to cool things down/draw moisture out of the hive.
  7. Re: Managing and Identifying Younger Bees to go into Winter

I'd be inclined to let them go into the winter with whatever cluster size they "think" is right.

Re: Why do you keep bees

Once society crumbles, I'll be trying to trade my honey for buckskin. :D Brain tanning deer hides is one of the most tiring, time consuming tasks I've ever worked at.

As far as the OP goes, it's a...

Re: To feed the bees or let them forage...

I'm getting back into hobbyist beekeeping after a 20 year hiatus, so I'm a novice for all intents and purposes, but I will say this, it's been a strange year in the Northeast.

    All that rain in...

    Re: Treating Varroa now?

Personally, I would get a mite drop count before I even thought about treating, regardless of flow.

While I'm not an expert, I don't personally know a single beekeeper who doesn't have them. They...

    Re: Duragilt vs Wired Foundation

I've not used Duragilt, but my understanding is that the cell "guides" are embossed into the wax coating, and not the plastic. If you needed to scrape off the comb for any reason, this would render...

Re: What choices do I have?

You might find a local club or beekeeper who will let you use an extractor, but I think a search here on "crush and strain" will give you some good ideas.

As far as wax vs. plastic goes, I'm guessing that any commercially purchased foundation contains a number of different pesticide/antibiotic/other residues that I don't think are particularly good for...

Re: New Bee Movie - Documentary

According to the film maker's website, she has a husband. Don't think she qualifies as a man hater.

Maybe she just wanted to make a movie about female beekeepers...

I look forward to seeing it....

    Re: Smoker after visit

I would fold up the back seat, if it's still in your jeep, and place a somewhat sturdy metal box in back to cart your smoker around in.

    Re: after tylan treatment?

A quick look at the Tylan labeling "Residue Warning" info online suggests that treatment should be completed "at least four weeks prior to main honey flow."

Re: How to kill bees in a hive?

Depends on the size of the foundation, and the size of the cells.

I've read that a deep averages 3,500 per side, but I've never confirmed that.

A few thoughts from a neophite:

Seems to me it's pretty dark in hives when we aren't messing with them. I doubt marking has much, if anything, to do with it.
