Re: Should I become a commercial beekeeper?

I'm going into my 3rd year. I have 20 colonies. I purchase equipment as if I'm building towards sidelining. It takes time to build to a point of self sufficiency. Hopefully that point is 200-300...

    Re: SHB population growing

For SHB control I have a SSB #6 mesh with an oil trap underneath. Works very well. I want to use a dry material instead. Anyone using DE or Boric Acid in the place of oil?

    Re: Expensive bottom board screens!

From what I'm reading here you want 8 mesh hardware cloth. I was able to find small rolls at True Value. I purchased a roll of 6 mesh from Argus Steel. This is galvanized steel .035 size wire, pretty...
  7. Re: does the Queen lay in aQueen cell or do they build a Q C around an egg?

I thought that the queen simply lays the egg. The workers then, based on the needs of the colony, feed the larvae differently to determine whether a queen or worker develops. The queen determines...

Re: what did I do wrong?

+1--I was able to over winter my colonies by leaving 1 medium super of honey on each one. In colder areas I understand that they may need more. Priority has to be survival, nothing does that better...
  10. Re: Need help to get bees to go to different water source!!! ASAP

I hate to be the second on this but Joseph is 100% spot on. The only thing you can do is eliminate the bees that go to that water in hopes of getting them all, you will not succeed. I was lucky my...
  11. Trying to save a colony. Could use some advice.

I am attempting to save a colony that is the result of a Sept 10th swarm. The story goes..

  12. Re: Thought about splitting but bees swarmed

No not a canon but an AK47. Took a few shots. Knocked a hole in the roof of my shed. I had never seen bees swarm before. Quite an impressive sight. About 8lbs of bees. I put them in two 8 frame deeps...
  13. Thought about splitting but bees swarmed

I thought it was too late in the year for a split. I guess I was wrong cause the bees from my strongest hive swarmed today.
The girls went up 80ft to a limb in a gum tree. To retrieve the swarm I...

    Re: Hive Top Feeder/Killer

This is my first year as a beekeeper. I chose the Mann Lake
FD-118, plastic two sided with a screen to keep the bees contained. I found that they killed 50-100 bees every couple of days. I was able...

I guess that these videos haven't been talked about very much. I happened to stumble on them while searching for videos concerning beekeeping. I did a search of this site before I asked about them.
