Does this stuff just happen to me??

Ok, I have a hive that swarmed 2 weeks ago ( I sat in my truck and watched it). It was a deep and 2 mediums. Sunday when I went to inspect I could tell the population was in decline, but not...
  2. Re: Full of bees, honey and no eggs, larva or brood

Sounds like the hive swarmed a while ago. Hopefully a new mated queen will show up. You can always add a frame with young larvea on it.

A few weeks ago while inspecting one of my strong hives I found a few capped swarm cells on a frame. I managed to locate the queen and pulled her out and put her along with several shakes of bees...

Re: What are your thoughts on queen excluders

I haven't used excluders much in the past. But being fairly new and having some difficulty finding queens, this year (prior to a flow) I have used excluders to help isolate which box the queen is in...

I'm not sure how nice you wanna go, but I built one out of a cheap stryrofoam cooler with a piece of lexan plexiglass mounted into the top. Spray painted it black and lined the inside with tin foil....

Re: Trying OTS..Notched my First Frames

I did manage to get a small queen cell on my last OTS attempt, I didn't think to get a picture. I went ahead and put it in a nuc, we'll see how she goes.
This week I decided to do one more test. I...

Re: Trying OTS..Notched my First Frames

I didn't get any confirmed queen cells from my combining nucs experiment, which was no surprise. However on the bottom of one of the notched frames it looked like they had potentially started a...

Re: Trying OTS..Notched my First Frames

Actually it wasn't a typo , Thanks for pointing that out. I went back and looked in the book to see where I got those numbers and the egg stage is 1-3 days and the Larvae stage is day 4 -8....

Re: Trying OTS..Notched my First Frames

That would probably work. Like a lot of things, one of the keys to OTS is timing.

**NOTE** I am starting my 4th year of beekeeping and know just about enough to be dangerous.

    I'm still pretty...

Re: Trying OTS..Notched my First Frames

  18. Re: Controlling Pests on Young Apple trees in my Apiary

Thanks for the replies. Based on damage to the leaves my first suspect would be caterpillars. I know its not deer because a Deer fence was the first thing I put up. I have some BT, may try that....
  19. Controlling Pests on Young Apple trees in my Apiary

Last year I planted some yearling Apple trees in my apiary and late in the season bugs really hammered the leaves. At the time I didn't want to do anything to harm my bees so I did nothing about the...

Re: Trying OTS..Notched my First Frames

I also thought about using a inner cover with an elongated feeder hole above the queen excluder to reduce queen scent, but still give bees some access to the super with notche'd cells.
