    Re: tankless water heater

    Phoebee,
What kind of propane generator do you have? My gasoline generator has burned me for the last time by not starting when I needed it. The mechanic said to switch to propane for more...

    Re: Found Queen Cells

I also ran into this same situation. Inspected a hive that is not progressing like my others. There are eggs and brood of all ages on 3 frames and I found a single supercedure cell on one of them. ...
  3. Re: Two honey harvest, each different, one a little aftertaste

Same here in GA. Goldenrod honey is dark and has a definite lingering aftertaste.

Re: Considering switching to Oxalic Acid

My concern of the OA dribble is it causes some bee loss. When the bees ingest it, it wreaks havoc with their digestion.
Also, the OA dribble is done in the winter when the bees are clustered. I...

Re: Considering switching to Oxalic Acid

You mean the mite's legs fall off, right?
I would love to see an electron microscope picture of one after a treatment. I think that would be a great thesis research project.

Re: Considering switching to Oxalic Acid

I just finished a certification course and one of the lecturers said that the OA only works on phoretic mites which are those attached to adult bees. Since all of the mite's life cycle revolves...

    Re: what are they doing?

Since you are in TX, they probably won't need that big of a cluster to make it through the winter. If you have drawn frames, it will help them build up faster. If you don't have any, I would guess...

    Small swarm??
Collect it and see if there is a queen in there.
  9. Re: Oxalic acid treatments...vaporization...my 1st experience doing it...

This is only my second year and I am probably over-reacting to the mite issue but I treat at 7 day intervals and give each hive 5 treatments. My first treatment was last week so I have 4 more to go....

    Re: No Honey

It is the result of coming to the end of a dearth.
I have noticed the same thing about several of my hives. Some frames had a small amount of nectar but nothing capped. The queens had plenty of...
  11. Re: Oxalic acid treatments...vaporization...my 1st experience doing it...

I am using SBB on all my hives and put the vaporizer under the screen so the bees don't get cooked. I simply slide the drawer closed with the vaporizer on it and drop a rag over the entrance to seal...

    Treat or Inspect First

    All,
I have to visit an outyard (30 minute drive) where I have to OAV treat the hives plus do an inspection on them.
To save a trip, can I perform both tasks on the same day?
    If both tasks can be...

Re: Brood comb on top bars

When I scrape away the burr drone comb, I use the opportunity to look at the pupae to see how mite infested they are.

Re: Another Hive has absconded due to shb

How often are the hives inspected? A SHB infestation will take at least 2 weeks to get started. I inspect every 10 days and when I see excessive SHB (not this year, PTL), I consolidate frames to...
  17. Re: Vacuum Packed Honey in a Jar Experiment

Were they both filled to the same level?
  18. Re: Vacuum Packed Honey in a Jar Experiment

An application I could see is speeding the process of removing air bubbles from the honey after extracting.
Don't put on such a deep vacuum and it would probably improve honey clarity in just a few...
  19. Re: Vacuum Packed Honey in a Jar Experiment

    What a fascinating experiment.
Here is what I think. Lowering the atmospheric pressure causes the honey to boil. The upper layer of foam is mostly air with some honey coating the bubbles.
    The...

    Re: Goldenrod in West Georgia

The bees don't touch the short variety of goldenrod in my area. They only work the tall variety. I don't know the names of the two types but it is very apparent when you view them side by side. ...

    Re: Empty Bottom super

You need to see if a queen is present by either finding eggs or locating the queen.
If there isn't a population to fill both boxes, I would consolidate occupied frames into a single box to lessen...

    Thanks Stan.

Thanks for confirming my thinking, Ray!
I just hope the existing queen gets off her butt and starts cranking out some eggs to build up for the flow.

    Should I Combine Now

    All,
Two of my hives are struggling. One is a split I made that is taking forever to build up. It has a laying queen but the hive population is not high. Last week, I added a capped brood frame...

    Re: Refractometer

It is important that you stir the honey frequently when attempting to dehydrate. It is just the surface of the honey that dehydrates and you need to stir to exchange the surface honey.
