Re: Jack Frost has Arrived :(

You lived east of Syracuse NY. I lived here for 61 years. I just retired from the CSX railroad. Worked 40 years on the RR. At times I wonder if its worth living here with our short summer season.

Re: Jack Frost has Arrived :(

Beekeeping is a tough hobby living here in the lake Erie Snowbelt. My bees spend 6 months in the boxes. Last winter my 4 hives made it, now I have 6. I hope I can do the same this winter. Its not...

Re: Oxalix Acid with Screened Bottom Board

I slide in a sheet of roof flashing the size of my screen bottom board on top of the screen. Underneath the bottom board screen I use a piece of plastic to get the mite drop. I plug up the back and...
  8. Re: What do you do with the frames during the winter?

When finished extracting put all frames back in the box, put box on two blocks, let the bees have a clean up party. Your bees will do a nice job cleaning them for you.

Re: Price of Nucs in your area ?

Nucs are going for 90 to 200 dollars. Who knows what they will sell for next spring. I guess supply and demand will control the price. Already the almighty dollar is destroying the industry. its time...

Re: Varroa mite counts / oxalic acid vapor

    Re: Birds and bees

I don’t think your cardinal is the problem. What makes you think your cardinal is killing your queens. Cardinals don’t know the difference between a worker bee or queen. move your queen rearing to...
  14. Poll: Re: Are nails/staples enough for frames or do they also need glue as well.

Lets compare the diameter of a nail and staple. The nail is bigger and longer and will penetrate the wood a lot better. You can get them coated too for more strength. Staples are thin. Have less...
  15. Poll: Re: Are nails/staples enough for frames or do they also need glue as well.

I glue and nail my frames together. 8 nails per frame. I wouldn’t staple frames together because they aren’t strong enough. Staples are a lazy mans way of doing a job.
  16. Re: Meathods of treating for Varroa while supering?

treat with mite away quick strips now.
  17. Re: Backyard Beekeeper that develops bad neighbor relation issues ... to the extremes

My opinion bees belong in the country away from people. If you put hives in the city or suburbs Use common sense. Check with your neighbors first to see if you can keep a few hives there, if they say...
  18. Re: What is everyone paying for a package this year?

And you forgot to mention the mites that come with the nucs too. At these prices. All nucs should be treated for mites.
  19. Re: What is everyone paying for a package this year?

Packages, nucs and queens are getting to be very expensive. A few more years of paying for overpriced bugs, Then who’s going to be able to afford them. My opinion the beekeeper that makes his own...

    Re: Epi-pen?

The bee shot program works like this. You need a blood test first to see if you are allergic to honeybees. The first 6 weeks I got 3 shots per week. After the 6 weeks, I get one shot every 4 weeks...

    Re: Epi-pen?

I get the bee shoots too. I wont renew my epi pen when my pen expires. Bee shoots are better. One visit to the emergency room is enough for me.

    Re: Epi-pen?

See an allergy doctor first to see if you are allergic to honeybees. Simple blood test will tell if you are allergic. Epi pens are very expensive. If you are allergic its cheaper to get the shots.

    Re: Next Mite Treatment

I use MAQS strips in the spring and treat again in The middle part of August. My 4 hives so far have come through the winter OK. Good product if you use it the right way.
