    UPDATE....now that the sun has set, husband spent a few minutes around the hive (very guarded and temperamental lately, didn't want to smoke them) 3 sides of the boxes look good, its the fourth side...

    For quite sometime (about half the summer) we noticed bees in our second hive had much more black, black head and black thorax, black and brown bottom end. Are these Russian?

    haha well I was intelligent enough to wear the veil while pulling the hive apart otherwise. It's not cumbersome at all and pretty secure. Has me thinking I may not go gloveless.
