Sticky: Re: squarepeg 2015 treatment free experience

With regards to productivity and my biggest challenge to being what I consider a responsible beekeeper ....this is my single biggest issue. I've split the daylights out of as many as I could...

I'm not being critical here but wonder about this. Are you propping up your three smallest colonies at the expense of your three strongest? Does this meet your vision of treatment free?

From what I've read Florida commercial queen producers are under some pretty strict oversight. As I understand it they are required to have samples of their queens genetically tested for AHB each...

  8. Re: Just when i thought my bees had made it through the winter..... UGH

My first question would be did the hives have honey? It is my firm belief that granulated sugar or candy boards are not a substitute for honey. They require sufficient moisture to dissolve and energy...

Re: First year plan ADVICE wanted

Let me preface this by telling you that I am neither a small cell nor treatment free beekeeper....so take my advice accordingly.
If you have conventional cell nucs ordered and are unable to find hsc...

Re: First year plan ADVICE wanted

Someone is surely going to correct me but from everything I've seen hsc is only available periodically and then only when enough advance orders are in place. If that is the case, do you have a plan...

Re: First year plan ADVICE wanted

To the op...I may have missed this but do you already have the hsc? If not, you may find it difficult to get, if I'm not mistaken. If you can't find any, you may want to review your options.

Is this the same guy who recommended hsc in his book?
  14. Re: New UPS rules for shipping bees? Anyone know more about this?

I don't know about that. A package of bees broken open....in a confined area....even the toughest folks would be dangerously distracted. We might have been doing it for a hundred plus years but the...

    Re: Clipping Wings

Ok....the clipped queen blows out the front of the hive with half the bees....she doesn't know she can't fly. She plops to the ground. After a while....the queenless swarm returns to the hive. A few...

They still need moisture to make it consumable.

Some years ago I got packages and was surprised at how little of the syrup had been consumed.

I just got a cardboard box of queens shipped via...

    Re: Clipping Wings

I've had a few. I've never seen a real downside but I just don't do it. One of my best queens ever had a clipped wing. A couple of seasons I found her on the ground in the front of her hive with a...

Re: 0 to swarm in 8 days

As opposed to your swarm moving into the wall of your neighbor's house? I can see doing it. I don't myself.....but it can be the lesser of the evils for a responsible beekeeping neighbor.

Look around the hive on the ground for a clump of bees. If she was clipped....that's where you'll find her.
