    Get some Guinea Fowl.
They love to surround and destroy snakes.
    That 'snake oil' won't work.

    Re: Bradford pear trees

My bees are all over them when they come into bloom.
The BP is usually the first trees to bloom in my area.
But as a tree, they suck.
    I don't like them.

    Re: Storing pollen patties

I refrigerate mine in a small fridge kept in the garage.
    Easier to handle than frozen.
    Never had any go bad.
  6. Re: Is there a consensus on Screened bottom boards ?

Ah, I always took for granted they were.
  7. Re: Is there a consensus on Screened bottom boards ?

From my limited understanding, they mate with their brothers that are in cell with them before emerging.

    Re: Foundationless or using foundation?

Yeah, it's all a matter of personal experience and a highly subjective topic.
Best advice is to try it and see what you think.
I think stuff like this, trying and learning is what makes beekeeping...

    Re: Foundationless or using foundation?

I didn't like how the brood nest was getting laid out.
Worker brood here, a big patch of drones there. Just not conducive to a proper brood nest and it hurts winter survival.

    A well laid out...

    Re: Foundationless or using foundation?

Try it and come to your own conclusion.

I was running foundation-less with alternating foundation and have decided to move to all foundation.
    YMMV

    Re: Just my Opinion

I wouldn't mind having one or two of every type of hive just for fun.

    Check out this rotatable beehive.

  13. Re: Mimic a Natural Hive for Winter Observations

Just spitballin' an ideal here, but perhaps you could cut off a side of the log and install Plexiglas.
Then reattach the cut off portion with hinges, so you could open & close it.
  14. Re: Mimic a Natural Hive for Winter Observations

Sounds like a beegum with an observation port to me.

    Re: Screen Bottom Boards

I gave up on screened in favor of solids.

Seemed the Queens didn't want to move down into the bottom box.
I am guessing they didn't like the light.

Bees would get stuck under the hive.

    Had...

    Re: Marking queen question

    Not really needed.
    I don't mark.
