Re: Mann Lake plastic frames PF-127

That's good advise, I do use different frames in the honey supers with an excluder. The foundationless frames in the supers extract very nicely.

old sol in Oregon has some survivor bee nucs give him a call. http://oldsolbees.com/shop/
  4. Re: How do you apply the lemon grass oil or swarm commander on a swarm trap?

I use the qtip in a sandwich bag without zipping it closed. I lay it on the top bars, & put a couple drops at the entrance.

Re: Making your own drone comb for DHCs

This time of year you're hives want one or 2 frames of drone brood. Put an empty frame in & you'll get drone brood.

Re: AG Burning and Other Control Burns

I burn near my hives occasionally. The bees get a little testy but that's about it.

Re: small cell into large cell colony?

Unless they changed the wood frames with plastic are not 4.9 small Cell. Only the standard plastic frames where.
I bought some of the wood ones for honey supers this year, & they are not small cell....

    Re: Powdered Sugar Shake

I use powdered sugar dusting as part of my IPM approach to mite control. We use IPM in combination with small cell frames & have very good results.

    Re: What bee suits you?

My local small cell muts survive without treatment, & make honey.
For Ohio Northern CA bees would be better then GA bees. Northern CA gets snow. Its more a mater of local plant bloom times, &...
  12. Re: Can you extract capped honey from a deadout for human consumption?

There is nothing wrong with extracting the honey for human consumption, as long as you didn't use medications in the hive.

Re: Mann Lake plastic frames PF-127

I like the cell size & use the frames in brood boxes. I don't like the small cell size in the honey supers. Our summer honey runs abt. 16% moisture & its hard to get it all out of the small cell...

Re: Hello from Pleasant Hill, California

Great, this place is a wealth of information. All my beekeeping methods where honed from things I learned here.
  16. Re: Screened bottom board with solid board or without?

I've been reading on here 8 or 9 years. There are beekeepers in Colorado, NY & other cold places that leave the bottoms open all year.
This was a very popular topic years ago.

  17. Re: Minimum number of hives to be self sustainable and TF?

I've been doing well with IPM, & under 20 hives.
No longer need to purchase packages or queens.
    Even sell a few nucs.

Re: Oxalic Acid Fog? (not vaporization)

Might be more dangerous to the person applying the pesticide.
The liquid drizzle method is only supposed to be used once per year, the fog would also be a wet treatment.

  21. Re: Screened bottom board with solid board or without?

Hi Kilocharlie, Another way to do mite count with PS is the accelerated drop. Place a dry whit board in the slot, powder sugar the hive, remove board & count mites 20 minutes later.

  22. Re: what size swarm trap have you had success with

Mine have frames in them, wouldn't want to trap a swarm then have to do a cut out on them.
Another thing in Seeley's book, is that they prefer 11' or higher off the ground. If using a standard 3/4"...

Maybe put the whole thing in a mesh laundry bag then in washer on gentle.
I wash mine with the hood inside a sleeve to protect the screen.
  24. Re: what size swarm trap have you had success with

According to Honey Bee Democaracy, bees prefer a box at least 40 liters in capacity. When I did the math if came out to a 10 frame deep box.
Read the book over a year ago, so sorry if the numbers...
