    Re: Swarm hive trouble

This is where our club buys their queens from. Not sure if they have any to ship right away, but more queen bee supplies are ramped up for the main season right now....

    Re: Swarm hive trouble

If you are not sure if a hive is queenless, put a frame of eggs in there. If they start drawing out queen cells, you have your answer. You can then order a queen and introduce her to the hive.
  3. some of my bees migrated to another colony when I switched out their box

I am raising topbar nucs this year to get other people started. I had 2 small colonies in a full size hive that was divided by 3 division boards to keep them separate (but I still saw some bees...

Re: When to Give Them the Whole Hive

If the cups have nothing in them, they are harmless. And at 3 total, I'd still suspect a supersedure. If you inspect and find more queen cells with larvae in multiple stages of development, they...

Re: Lured in a swarm- what's next?

My swarm box is 10 bars (but it hasn't caught a swarm yet). I've only had one swarm (my hive) that I rehomed in a 5 frame nuc. I'm not sure if a swarm would have picked that size box as it's a bit...

Re: When to Give Them the Whole Hive

If this was a package install (and not a nuc) you can expect the bees to replace their queen in the first year. How many queen cells? If it's just a few, it's a supersedure and you should just let...

Re: Lured in a swarm- what's next?

Congrats on getting a swarm to move in. I'd caution against checking through the window too much; they might decide to find somewhere else. Wait at least a week before doing any inspection or...

Re: Not sure what bush this is

This is my winter honeysuckle. It blooms in Feb and before the leaves are fully out. If it's warm enough, the bees love it. This is Lonicera fragrantissima.

Re: Not sure what bush this is

I agree it's some kind of honeysuckle, but it doesn't look quite like my winter honeysuckle. Flower petals are a bit longer than mine. Are the flowers fragrant?

Some of you are not being very kind to a newbee who posted what looks like a legitimate question.

    Re: dark pollen or propolis?

pollen comes in a range of colors. Does anyone nearby have oriental poppies blooming? My blackberry pollen is a nice charcoal gray.

    Re: Sciatic Nerve Pain

Cameron, if you haven't been regularly stung by the bees, please start slow. Like no more than 3 stings at a time. I was using BVT for other aches and pains and I never needed more than 3 at once....
  14. Re: Newbee, New TBH, New Bees and No Comb a Week Later :/

Am I reading your post correctly that you have the bees only entrance/exit blocked off by 1/4 inch screening? If you do, please open that up immediately. The bees need a cleansing flight to keep...

how about giving them a separate entrance so they don't have to pass through the excluder.

Re: When to Give Them the Whole Hive

The first year is all about getting drawn comb for a TBH. If they have filled up the area that you have given them with drawn comb, continue to move the follower board so they have more room. If...
  18. Re: Bee math - How many pollen baskets to fill a cell?

I trap pollen off my bees so I happened to have some in the freezer to answer your question. I was up to 22 pollen balls in a standard piece of brood comb when I busted the cell wall packing it in. ...

Re: Newbee. New member. please help.

do you have a follower board installed so they don't have the entire length of the hive to build? A new package should only get about 5-8 bars to start with. And exactly where in the hive is the...
  22. Re: Need your advice on newly installed package

I like to use a hanging file folder frame as my extra set of hands when taking pictures or moving queen cells.
