    Re: Hive Stands?

One use of those "stands" that contain the ramps is if you have a problem with skunks (or similar pests) ... the ramp provides a good place to hammer some nails from the bottom up, creating a spike...

    Re: lemon honey first time

Not sure I understand ... honey doesn't spoil ... so what's the point of the lemon juice?

    Re: First sugar roll...

They are most certainly not TF stock - I bought New Zealand packages (which I've regretted a touch since learning about better, local varieties). The queens are both good though, they were never...

    First sugar roll...

It's my first year with 2 (brand new) hives, both have built up nicely and are strong. I've decided to try treatment-free from the get-go (yes I know there are a ton of naysayers that say people...

To wrap or not to wrap?

I'd like to take a "poll" here to see what the general consensus is around wrapping hives for overwintering purposes. So, a couple questions:

    1) Do you wrap your hives?

    2) What winter...

Dry sugar on wintering inner cover?

For emergency stores (throughout the upcoming winter), can I just throw some dry sugar "in" the inner covers I have on my hives?

  7. Re: Why the heck does my bee look charred by a fire?

Using smoke that's way too hot? ;)
  8. Re: Will bees reach second honey super in winter?

    Thanks.

Yeah I have been feeding (albeit a bit sparingly so far), but might amp that up now for the fall season. I wasn't really sure what sort of "fall flow" we had in our area and didn't want...
  9. Will bees reach second honey super in winter?

I have a question about winter stores. I'm planning on wintering my hives with a 4 medium box configuration. It looks to me like the brood nest has shrunk for the most part to the second box, and...
  10. Re: box arrangement for over wintering - lower box is empty

I asked a similar question a few days ago:

    http://www.beesource.com/forums/showthread.php?303570-Hive-body-count-reduction-for-wintering-question!http://

I've decided i'm going to leave them...

Re: Never Treated Before- Asking Advice

Sounds to me like your single deep hive is a bit small/weak to have a hope of making it through the winter. I'd consider combining them ... and i wouldn't treat unless u know there's a problem.

    Re: Rose Hive Method

That method gets mentioned on the forums now and then. In reality, it's no different really than running hives with all mediums (for example) with no queen excluders, and the downside is all the...

    Re: Pollen Stores

The beekeeping calendar from the ministry of agriculture here in BC recommends the equivalent of 2 full frames of pollen per hive.

Re: HELP! How to get hive ready for winter

Just a quick point to negate further confusion down the road ... :)

When beekeepers talk about "supers", they are generally referring to the hive bodies ABOVE the brood boxes. The word super...

When to reduce entrances for winter prep?

When do folks normally begin reducing entrances for winter prep? I'm currently running them wide open at the moment as I haven't had any robbing problems at this point ... but know I need to...

    Re: Deeps or Mediums

If you read Michael Bush's literature I'm surprised you didn't start with 2 hives... :)
  17. Re: Hive body count reduction for wintering ... question!

There are a ton of bees in the bottom boxes, covering most of the frames, just no brood or honey stores. There is indeed pollen in there, although not a ton. I've had the "sticky" boards in since I...
  18. Re: Hive body count reduction for wintering ... question!

Actually your assumption is not correct! I do have screened bottom boards but have had them covered the entire time.
  19. Re: Hive body count reduction for wintering ... question!

    So, overwinter in 4?

    I guess ... why not? :)
  20. Hive body count reduction for wintering ... question!

I'm a new beekeeper this year with 2 hives, both with 4 (10 frame) medium hive bodies currently.

I want (or I think I want!) to overwinter them in 3 mediums ... but I'm a little unsure of the...

When does egg laying slow down?

I did an inspection (albeit fairly brief) yesterday and couldn't really see any eggs. I'll admit I didn't look in all the boxes, just one brood box per hive, and just inspected a few frames. There...

Re: Entice bees to fill bottom box?

There is drawn comb in the bottom box yes.

I only have 4 medium boxes per hive at the moment (brand new hives this year). They are filling (perhaps almost full) the 4 (medium) box, while largely...

Entice bees to fill bottom box?

I checked both my hives a week ago and in both cases the bottom (brood) boxes were almost completely empty and quite light. They had a ton of bees on the frames (perhaps preparing the comb for...
