  1. Re: Can someone look at this picture? I hope I didn't screw up.

Drones supposedly attract mites so you can check those drone larvae for mites, looks like none, excellent. :)
  2. Re: Jan Dzierżoń (Johann Dzierzon) - true father of beekeeping

    Guys let's chill.

I have often heard Rev Langstroth referred to as the father of modern beekeeping, no problem with the term, and until this thread had assumed he was.

    But if Dzierżon came up...

    Re: Queen laying in super

So the hive is 3 deeps with no excluder? And a few weeks ago it had just 1 frame of brood? If so which box is the brood in, how much honey do they have, and what is the outcome you want to achieve?
  4. Re: What is the most expensive honey you have seen advertised recently?

You probably still can get low grade manuka in a supermarket here for about double that, depends what grade it is. The 20+ is all exported nobody local would pay that or buy it.

    Go back to when I...

What is this hive? A 2 super hive with the queen laying in the top one?
  6. Re: What is the most expensive honey you have seen advertised recently?

It's a great time to be a beekeeper in NZ. :)

The prices I linked though, nobody local pays that, it's for Chinese.

    Re: Trying Hopguard II

Something to be aware of here is this is not really a lot of mites, and that at any time when broodnest is normal, around 80% of mites are within the brood.

So based on the numbers, hopguard has...

    This, 250 g pot for NZ$ 259.99

    http://www.comvita.co.nz/products/umf20-manuka-honey/A3027

    250g is a fraction over 1/2 a pound, and NZ$ 259.99 is US$ 183.84.

To convert to US dollars per...

    Ha Ha good story!

For me I wind the temperature well up then bring it down as the unit stats vaporising nicely.

Here's a link to a video I found of a flowhive working just as intended, a nice, feelgood video.

Another interesting thing is the number of "early fathers" who were theologians. Dzierzon, Langstroth, Abbe Emile Warre, Brother Adam, and more.

    Very interesting read Overseas Beekeeper.

He must have been an incredible guy to move from skep beekeeping, to make all the discoveries he did, even the secretion of royal jelly. A man truly in...
  17. Re: Ultrasonic Rodent Deterrents & their effect on Honeybees

They do not work and will not bother either the bees, or the groundhog.

How do I know this? A local tv program that investigates consumer issues checked them out. They purchased the several...

    Re: brood comb

Many people on this forum put chemicals in their hives to kill varroa mites so some of them replace their brood combs every few years because of possible chemical buildup.

    But since you are in...

Re: Swarm Control Made Very Easy Apparently

I had a brief flirtation with carniolans but ended up getting rid of them for that very reason, couldn't keep them at home.

Pity because other than that the breed has some very good points.
  24. Re: How can you tell if honey from failed hives is safe to give to bees.

Do you still have some comb with dead brood in it? If so this could help diagnose what kind of disease it was. If you did not treat for mites it's overwhelmingly likely it was mites killed the hives,...
