  1. Re: Wet frames and cappings - preferred methods of giving back to the bees

I put my capping box on the deck and let the bees clean it up. Then, I transfer the cleaned up layer to the solar wax melter I concocted. Eventually, the cappings box is empty of wax and honey, the...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

I checked on one of my splits that had made their own queen who, two weeks ago, was laying well. Well, today, no where in sight and she left no evidence that she had been there, except for one small...

Thank you so much. Tomorrow, they are due to emerge. I am trying to wait until Thursday to peek in. I tell you, it's like giving birth.

    First queen cells; request feedback

These are my first queen cells. Yesterday, I put them six into mating nucs. There were two that had discolored royal jelly - brown, not white. I dissected these and there were purple-eyed queens;...
  5. Re: How many of you have bears causing problems?

I just saw a bear coming home from a meeting tonight. It was enormous, in the middle of the dirt road I was on. I slowed down to get a good look (felt very safe in my pickup), and he ambled off...

    Re: Two Queen System

I started a 2-queen system in May with a Snelgrove board. In a couple days I will be checking to see if the virgin queen has come back mated. If not, I will recombine the top and bottom.

    I have...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

This week I caught and marked three queens. I catch them with my handy plastic queen catching clip. The ladies I catch with her can escape, but she is trapped. Then, for extra insurance I use a...

Re: Feeding a nuc? Quick question.

I use this nuc top feeder from Miller Bee Supply: http://millerbeesupply.com/catalog/frame-feeder-p-191.php

You can use either a telescoping cover or a migratory cover with it.

    I don't like...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

Today, I set up one of my strongest hives for a Snelgrove split. Of course, I couldn't find the queen. I put all the brood in the top box, and the stores and one frame of brood too old to make a...

Re: Brood in the top super

You're going to have make sure there is an upper entrance/exit. When the drone brood hatches, the drones won't be able to fit through the excluder.
I have had a similar situation here.

Went into my four hives for spring inspection. Reversed the boxes, took eight frames of honey, and added drawn and foundation to expand the brood nest. There was capped drone and worker brood in...

Re: chicken layer mash and beach wood chips

I just cut down a huge beech, almost two feet in diameter. The bees were all over the sawdust on the ground - you couldn't walk for stepping on them. They were also all over the cut ends. Hundreds...
  15. Re: Three colors of pollen coming in today and uncapped honey visible

The bright orange pollen is crocus.

I planted quite a few Hyacinthoides last fall. They're related to scilla. The bees are all over them, several to each blossom. They have no pollen in their...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

I had given my girls (four hives, all survived the winter) pollen patties ten days ago. I went in today to see how they are doing. There are tons of bees in there, so many more than ten days ago. ...

  21. Re: Creating a Preemptive Swarm; The Taranov Manouver
