    Re: The best queen catcher

Hang the queen catcher around your neck on a lanyard or string. Add one of those plastic spring things for your keys.

Thanks again, Fusion. Your effort in writing up that post about frames was valiant and stands as one of the great pieces of information here on Beesource. Bravissimo!

Actually, my bees love going for a ride to a new nectar flow. You should see them attacking the Red Apple Aptenia this week. It looks like every flower has a honeybee.

    Re: I'm a big dummy

With 10 hives, I 'd recommend trying the David LaFerney's / Joseph Clemens' method of making up a few queens at a time, all season long, in a ventilated 6-frame nuc' box, not batches of 48 queen...

Hops - inform the ATF officer that the sugar is for the bees, the corn is for the deer and the trout farm.

Thanks to y'all for the support and the multiple ROFLMAO's. It's morning out here and I'm at McDonald's sitting next to 50 cheerleaders. I keep falling out of my seat with laughter. It's a great way...

Wow! I'll try that one. :D

Graham - my bees are union members, so I pay them $39.45 per hour plus a huge benefit package - company housing, food, and medical.

    Re: Adding second box

SD & Stan - first year bees are mostly about populating up and drawing out combs for the brood nest. Second year bees need much closer attention to the honey supers. You guys have the instinct - hive...

    Assaulted by the opinion lady...

A nice-looking young lass was standing behind me in line at the cash register of a store when she overheard that I'm a beekeeper. She felt sufficiently offended by that fact that she did everything...

Re: Best time to cut out queen cells?

The New Zealanders had rough roads to cover, so they cut them at 2 days after grafting and let the mating nuc's be the finisher colonies and the mating nuc's. With the larvae still in the royal...
  15. Re: Hive designs and their advantages and disadvantages

Thank you, Dar. I'll build my own, so 31.5 mm width is it, and a follower board, and square mediums for the honey boxes. I'll order the 5.1 mm, and probably try Lauri's foundation arrangement, so...
  16. Re: Brushy Mountain Wax Master problems help!

Have you tried putting a thermometer in the water? Is any wax melting at all?

I'd get on the phone with Brushy Mountain real quick. 1 (800) BEESWAX.

The catalog does say on page 73, "its a slow...
  17. Re: Hive designs and their advantages and disadvantages

Yes, Darrell, and I am really impressed. Do you think 5.1 mm will give similar result, or do I need 4.9mm?

Also, exactly how wide are your frame side bars? Is that 31.5mm (= 1-1/4") the actual...
  18. Re: Capped queen cells and emerged queen(s) present, healthy hive, what to do?

Get an experienced beekeeper to look at the colony. If it is strong enough, you could split it - that is an option. You don't have to do that. Maintaining a strong colony to go into winter is the...

    Re: Queens missing ????

Also be aware that Carniolan bees adjust their populations to changing conditions rapidly. You probably don't have to beef them up, just feed them.

    Welcome to Beesource!

    Re: Requeening using cells

I prefer laying queens so that the production hives don't go off-line. For that, I use the Laidlaw queen introduction cage.

If I had a bunch of queen cells, I'd use them to make up mating nuc's,...

Re: Escape board or/and fume board?

If you have a few hives, escape boards makes sense. A brush or a large feather does the rest, and it's a wonderful day.

If you have a lot of hives, put on your good bee suit, gloves, and honey...
  23. Re: Capped queen cells and emerged queen(s) present, healthy hive, what to do?

If you want to increase the number of colonies, pull the capped queen cells out as soon as possible, and make nucleus colonies.

If this is your only colony, you could divide it in half, and add...

    Re: Consistency of sugar syrup

Winter = thick syrup = 2:1 sugar to purified water (use warm water).

Rest of the year, use Pro sweet, or make up 1:1 thin syrup with HBH and a drop of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar. Pro sweet...
  25. Re: Had to disassemble a laying worker nuc today

Next time add a laying queen in a separate box separated by a double screen Snelgrove Board. Freeze the "drone combs" to kill the mites. The laying queen outlives the LW's, and they can't attack her.
