    Re: First brood...?drone brood

That is what I am worried about.mI wondered if they would kill off a known good layer they had been living with through the summer over a new unproven Queen.

Re: Let's talk about lega vaporizer unit

I have used it and quite like it. A lot of vapour comes out in a hurry when the OA is hot enough to liquefy. You can see the vapour seeping out cracks at the top of the hive within moments of...

I posted this under observation hives but got no response so decided to try it here.

It is an observation hive that had a marked Queen when started at the end of the summer. I soon noticed there...

    New brood

Greetings..this my first winter with an observation hive...must say I love having it.

    Re: Observation Hive Plan

My son in law built me a bonterra hive. 5 frame singles. It is awesome and the bees seem very content in it. I give it two thumbs up.

  9. Re: Smaller mass merchant selling beekeeping equipment

We have a large local hardware and building supply store that is in the city and markets towards affluent folk. Since beekeeping has become the in thing they now carry bee supplies but have...

    Re: Maui beekeepers?

Let me know if you sort out bringing Queens back from Maui. I am heading there for a couple of weeks in March and would love to bring home some Queens.
  11. Re: Here is a tip that small beekeepers can use when processing wax.

    Interesting thread.
I simply let my cap pings or comb drain out for a while. Then I take a large rectangular pan and put half an inch of water in the bottom. Then "8 hardware wire cloth over the...

    Re: Observation hives?

We have 4 hives with "windows" and one box with 2 sides all glass. It is interesting but ,for me, not as instructive as the single wide 5 frame observation hive.

Re: True definition of "overwintered nuc"

If I were to buy a nuc advertised as an "over wintered nuc" I would e spect that those 5 frames, bees and Queen had over wintered as one unit and now we're being offered for sale as the same unit...

Did I miss it or did you say where you get dried egg and soy at reasonable prices. It doesn't add up getting it through a home baking outlet.

Use a tree pruning or hydro lift or climb. Some may say cut down the tree.

Re: Bees are dead! Now what?

I am no expert but wonder if the earlier activity was robbing. If you had a friend with bees you could have plumped up the dwindled hive with some bees as you still had a Queen.
    Given your situation...

    Re: moving nucs

I have my Nucs right up against my hives and they have been fine. I am certain I lose a few bees but it all seems to even out. If the nuc is thin on bees I trade places with an active strong hive.

Re: How many bees die per day overwinter?

I have an observation hive. Either they are really efficient at hauling out their dead or very few die. I rarely see a dead bee on the bottom of the hive.

    Varomor varroa fumigation device

This seems to come out of the Ukraine. Has anyone tried it or heard anything about it? Seems it can be used to distribute various varroa remedies into hives.
    Thanks for any feedback.

Re: How to determine 'the week before swarming'

So if you see that the arc is no longer empty how do you prevent solid honey overhead? Do you checkerboard the dada the above the brood nest to break up the solid honey above the brood nest?
