Re: Nosema? Check out these pics and weight in.

Thanks all, yesterdays hive inspection was odd.

Could not find a queen. Its been one month since the swarm. Here is what I saw.

    1. Bottom box, nothing but stores, uncapped cells of pollen and...

Re: Nosema? Check out these pics and weight in.

I think it may have started near the time when they swarmed... Certainly
    got worse after the swarm.

Re: Nosema? Check out these pics and weight in.

Not feeding at all now. I did a spring feeding as a procedural thing learned from Beekeeping for dummies. One batch of sugar syrup with anti-biotics and Honey B Healthy.

Nosema? Check out these pics and weight in.

My 2nd year hive, Russians who twice swarmed two weeks ago looks very messy. Prior to swarm I medicated with sugar syrup mixed with anti-biotic.

Look at the outside of the hive, stained yellow. ...
  6. Is there is a queen in a secondary swarm?

1st swarm in a 2nd year Russian hive was Sunday. Today, Wednesday, a secondary swarm. Is there typically a queen in a secondary swarm?
  7. Swarm capture & re-hiving into 1 week old Nuc. Thoughts on what next?

I had a 1 week old Nuc which was going to be a walk away split from a hive that swarmed yesterday. (witnessed the whole thing)

While wondering what to do with the swarm I inspected the Nuc and saw...
  8. Walk Away Split - What age egg/larva required to make new queen?

So I've been struggling to migrate my nuc frames from last year which I had to integrate into my medium hive. I built a shim to make it all work.

So this year I decided screw it, I'm pulling them...

    Re: Bee safe tick control?

Brettj777, would love to read these studies. Your citing a study that says this did NOT work in a NY, CT study but DID work in a MA study right?
  10. Re: Spring hive booming - 3 mediums - add a 4th brood box?

hmm, 1st time i've heard of the term unlimited brood nest. Nope, don't use an excluder. By opening up the sides of the brood nest what do you mean?
  11. Spring hive booming - 3 mediums - add a 4th brood box?

Typically my hives are 3 mediums for brood and 1 for honey when needed.

This hive is absolutely booming with bees and brood. Thinking another brood chamber may help ward off swarmyness.
    ...
  12. Re: 1st OAV Observations - nervous bearding bees

I was told 1 gram per brood chamber. I run mediums so I went conservative and actually did a bit over 2 grams for my 3 mediums.
  13. 1st OAV Observations - nervous bearding bees

Did my first OAV Sunday evening. Bees were NOT happy. They immediately bearded a bit and hung around the entrance buzzing.

Now its Tuesday afternoon and they are still doing it even though its...

Re: Bee's and my neighbors hotbtub

We got a tub in November and quickly found that our bees love it. Even with a tight cover they swarm the top and find cracks to get in.

NOT looking fed to this summer but I like the idea of...

Re: OA vaporizing equals angry bees

Hi there, 5th year beek. Over the winter I built a slick OAV tool and plan to use. Whats missing is the cadence of application. Can you share your application frequency per hive? I'm here in...
  16. Harvested on Sat., left empty frames in garage with door open - OOPS!

An amazing sight two hours after harvesting. Hive is on the other side of the house. In the garage where 10 empty, spun' frames PLUS 3 frames laden with honey/pollen/Wax Moth Larva.

    2 hours...
  17. Re: Laying Worker Shake-out, will the laying worker enter a functioning hive?

Great posts, I'm thinking now. Why bother shaking out! Its just one box of bees, mostly drones now, just let them die out over winter. Sounds draconian but even if there is a tiny chance that...
  18. Laying Worker Shake-out, will the laying worker enter a functioning hive?

I'm going to follow Michael Bush's shakeout method for a hive of mine that never got started and refused to accept a new queen. (4x)

My question is, by shaking frames in front of a good strong...

Re: Queen flew away while introducing!

All, so I've tried to introduce two more queens into this hive.

Pretty sure I have laying workers and no queen.

I read that with laying workers the hive is basically finished and all you can do...

Re: Introducing queen to queenless hive

I have no reco other than sharing my experience this year trying to do the same. (introduce a queen into a queen-less hive)

    Three attempts, all have failed.

First two attempts where with push...
  21. Placing Honey Super with partially filled frames from last year... OK?

Whats everyone think. I'm about to put a honey super on my hive. I have 4,5 frames from last year that I was not comfortable extracting as they either had non capped cells or where just not...
  22. Re: Deep nucs into mediums, please vet my plan...

Tx, all. Yes shaking is def. preferred to brushing so that is what I'd do for sure.

I'm also liking the idea of putting the deep frame box as my bottom box, letting it ride out the summer, then...
  23. Deep nucs into mediums, please vet my plan...

Hoping those with experience can comment on my plan to get rid of the 5 deep nuc frames that I now have in my medium boxes.

Here is what I think I want to do.

Assume I'm working with 3 medium...

Re: Queen flew away while introducing!

Tx, all. Good responses. Of course I had closed up the hive soon after she flew away. like most things, 'now I know' the Michael Bush hints. Makes total sense.

I'm cracking the hive today to...

Re: Queen flew away while introducing!

Tx all, makes me question the use of a push in cage vs. a standard queen 'match box'

Oh well, time will tell. This poor hive can't catch a break.
