More than likely the queen you will be getting is mated. If you are paying in the $20-$30 range it should be mated. If you are paying less than $10 it could be a virgin.

Add me to the list of people that thinks hopguard works. I only had 2 hives at the time, but I started this thread when I used it because I think it was fairly new and wanted to pass on the...
Believe it or not some of my bees were actually out flying around when we made this!
Kids were out of school today and had a little fun making a snow beekeeper.

That's good to hear. I've had great success with it and plan on continuing to use it as needed.
Same here. I did a lot of reading on Hopguard before I used it and never heard of anything like you describe.
Same thing happened to me last week. I waited until it was a little warmer and did a frame by frame inspection, but found nothing.
Nice! I love videoing and taking photos of the bees also. Mostly done from my phone as well since I always have it on my side.
I have a single deep hive that I started as a split a few months ago that needs a boost. A friend of mine has a TBH that is ate up bad with wax moths and small hive beetles and not going to make it...

I don't know how much help I'll be. Since my initial spring treatment my bees have done great and my mite counts have been very low so I don't think at this point that I will be doing a fall...
Sounds like you currently don't have a queen and they are building queen cells to replace her.
My first attempt I waited 24 hours and they killed the new queen. Second attempt I waited 10 minutes put her in a cage with a candy plug and she lived. If you wait 24-48hrs just make sure you...
Welcome. I grew up in Bucyrus!
I was in the same dilemma not to long ago and chose to treat. Treating I believe saved my hives and I haven't had to treat since and they are doing very well. I did a 24 hour mite drop count...
How many?
She didn't make it :(
On todays weekly inspection I couldn't find the queen and there were about a dozen capped queen cells. Oh well....lesson learned

Look closely at the extracted bees wings and see if they look shriveled up. I had the same scenario and it was bees pulling out other bees with deformed wing virus which was caused by a varroa...
I was marking my new Italian Queen yesterday and had to much of a glop of paint on the tip of the marker and covered her back and part of her head. I thought about ordering another queen just to be...
Looking back I know the first death of the new queen was my fault. I had raised queens before making splits, but never re-queened. My mistake was not checking for queen cells before putting the new...
