I am having some construction done to my house and the contractor wants me to move my hives. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I may contain the bees during the day, Hardware cloth in the...
I use a small generator or a battery operated vacuum.
I also have hived two swarms this week. Last year I got 3 July swarms and 2 of them made it through the winter. You really need to feed, feed, feed.
I had a pollination contract for a pumpkin field last year, and placed three of my best hives at the base of a cell tower. The three hives made it through the winter, and are booming this year thus...
I use the Crayola non toxic fluorescent pens from Wal*Mart. They work fine, and they are inexpensive. I think blue is this years color, last year it was green.
Jonathan ... I like to use a deep on the bottom, I think the queens lay better not having to hop up to the next level. You really only need to lift the top two when inspecting so utilizing a deep on...
make sure the hives have lots of ventilation. Do a good inspection as soon as you get them to your location. Remove any broken comb frames etc. that ooze honey if bees get drenched with the honey...
I do not personally charge for swarms. If anything I am thankful to the individuals that call me. The people that I only get one swarm from usually get a small jar of honey and my business card. The...
mrspock,
Thank you for the link....The article was very interesting.
It looks like it is more than one swarm too. If you combined them look for a dead queen. Same thing happened to me last year. I had two clusters and combined them into one hive body and the next day...
I purchased mine at Tractor Supply. The one downfall with them is that you either have to level your hive, or the feeder on top of your frames. If the feeder is tipped the sugar water runs out of the...
Mine were out for cleansing flights yesterday. The temp was only 44 f. and only two out of ten were flying.

Here is a picture of my son and I placing a 4 frame nuc into a 10 frame box. After I cut the comb off of the nuc lid and rubberband it to a frame there will be a five frames in a 10 frame box....Dumb...
it is a good idea to wipe your hive tools off with 70% isopropyl alcohol in between hives so that if a hive has a microbial problem it does not cross contaminate to other hives. This also keeps your...
One of the books that I enjoyed is that has not been mentioned is Keith Delaplane, Ph D Book : Honey Bees and Beekeeping: A Year in the Life of an Apiary.
The other books are very good as well. ...
Like you said the established hives are 5 supers over 2 deeps. The swarms are really small and not adding much. Most probably will not make the winter.
Once the honey cures it is really good.
Bill,...... I thought I was the only one with those tastes.
What about a piece of Styrofoam? It would take up space and insulate the sides.
I use a black bubble wrap from betterbee. I also use duct tape to seal up the screened bottom boards. One year I did not seal up a hive and I lost it. I think the cold winter wind did them in. We get...
11X I do the same thing I can fit 8 quart jars on top. If they are hungry they the girls can go through it in a couple of days.
I will talk.. I am from Pa. it is not New England, and it is raining here too. Tuesday we got 7" in 3 hours. still raining here.
Man I just burned all of mine::doh:
Is it better to keep the lines pure, or is the genetic diversity better way to go? One of my best hives are mut bees.
I use the bacon also. I was lucky to watch a bear. I must be a red neck it was really funny when the Bear's tung hit the fence.
