    Re: Cheap lumber

Why does everyone want lumber that is 9-5/8 width? I want a frame that will fit modern lumber. Keeping these messed up dimensions is so wasteful for the most part.
  2. Re: Newspaper combine queenright nuc with queenless hive?

I hopefully have or will have a couple of queens in mating nucs which for me are 5 frames. I have one hive that needs a new queen and this is exactly what I was planning. If I end up with 2 queens...

    Finding the queen

I have been through my hives several times now and I have yet to see the queen. For a general inspection if I see eggs I am fine. Lately I have been making some queens. I would rather take a frame...
  4. Re: Finding small clusters of almost dead bees outside at night.

beepro you have a lot of time on your hands. I had this happen to my hive. It was the first warm day in a while so I think that everybody flew out of the hive to do a clensing flight. I think that...

    Re: Record Keeping for Beeks

I don't have but 3 hives. I keep a journal (not a diary) listing date and what was done. I generally just bring enough stuff, or leave it at the site, to do what needs to be done at the time I...
  6. Re: Trying to make nucs but the bees keep going home

Does this happen if you put in some frames with open brood on it? That should be covered with nurse bees.

Re: heavy overwinter kill in MI

I am not that good at inspecting hives for disease as there are some diseases I have not seen yet. If they have not been through a hard freeze yet then I would put them in the freezer for a few days...

    entrance reducer

I got 2 nucs last year and I left the entrance reducer on them the whole year. It never seemed like a bottle neck as they come and go. This year the hives are bigger but the reduceer still does not...

Re: Marking Frames and Culling Old Frames

I was thinking about getting a sharpe marker and making a line on the top bar of the frame in the color of the queen marking system. I have wooden frames so I would be hoping that the marks would...

Re: When to do first inspection of the year?

I am in the Hampton roads area and I just checked mine this weekend. I saw several drones around in addition to worker bees, eggs. I gave everybody a super to work on but they still have a lot of...

Re: Wet looking comb during inspection.

if they are bringing in nectar then it could be nectar that is in the process of drying out to be honey. Does the hive have any other pests?

    Re: Vent for swarm traps?

Daniel: Sounds like a lot of ventilation. My concern is too little ventilation with a completely sealed box.

Adam: Your design sound very similar to mine. When you add the top holes why go...

    Vent for swarm traps?

I am building some swarm traps and I have been looking at various plans. I am using a standard box (10 frame and 5 frame) with several frames so that they can start building and live in it a while...

Re: hive with bees on the ground.

They were still active enough to send out a bee to sting me. I think the hives are doing ok. I brought some of the bees inside to look them over and I did not find any varrolla mite. As they...

Re: hive with bees on the ground.

I have one hive at another location about 6 miles away. I checked that hive and I am not seeing the same thing. It is not a huge amount of bees but is it something to be worried about? Any other...

hive with bees on the ground.

We had a warm day so the girls were flying. In front of the hive was a bunch ~100 bees that were sitting on the grass. This is occurring in front of both hives. Now that night is here I checked...

Thanks for the thoughts. I don't have anything to extract now. This is more a general question. The thought was to cut the cappings and leave it suspended in a tupperware container over night or...

Will honey drip out of the comb?

Can honey be harvested by cutting the caps, turning it over, and letting it drip out over night? Would it help to lay it flat for one night on each side? Would it work if the caps were cut deeper? ...

    Do you paint your hives?

    Hello,
I am in my first year of bee keeping and still adjusting the equipment I use. I know some people paint their hives, dip their hives or don't paint the hive at all. I want to know from...

    Re: Frustrated Beekeeping Mentor

I have not stuck with every hobbie I have tried. If they never tried then how would they know they did not like it. I would not beat myself up over it.
