    Re: my honey has turned

Sure, wait 6 months and wait some more. Flip a coin and take a taste. Wild yeast is not predictable which is why you kill it and add one that is predictable.
  2. Re: box arrangement for over wintering - lower box is empty

Put a 2 inch foam board on top of the cover with rock to hold down, add mouse guard and walk away.
  3. Re: Cappings melter out of an insulated box and a couple of lights???

Kind of like making a crock pot without the control knob. A few years back wax melter's were popular for feet and hand therapy.

    Re: Fall Feeding Strategy?

I lost my first hive to one of these combined with a newbie mistake. I think they are risky in the fall and the spring when they are used most often because condensation forms on the bottom and...

    Re: when to work bees?

Yes, and I should say my bees don't give up in the evening. They stay busy around the apiary. Not as busy as they are during the day but busy. I notice the evening is when they are working our...

    Re: when to work bees?

I think it is easier to do in the evening when it is cooler.

Re: Overwintewring in Lake Placid, NY

The only insulation I feel is warranted is on the top. That way you insure that the dew point temperature is reached on the walls before it is reached on the top. Some people do not ventilate the...

    Re: What is raw honey?

Once you uncap honey it will have a tendency to take on water. It is more likely you would be reducing the water content if it were too high.
  9. Re: In The News This a.m. Elton Manitoba Bee Poisoning

Really? You better hope he doesn't dump the poisoned hives near you or you could have the same problem. I don't think poisoning hives is a way you teach a lesson. You could remove your bees and...

    Re: Fall Feeding Strategy?

How does the logic of more bees and more feed fit with overwintering nucs? If a nuc can make it with less bees and less feed where is the panic?

This year is reportedly a banner year for honey so...

    Re: What is raw honey?

The only thing that you could add or subtract from honey and call it raw is water to bring it to acceptable levels.

Re: A down side to beekeeping.

I recently noticed spots on my white bee suit and didn't know the bees were like little kids having a contest of pooping on the beekeeper.

Re: A down side to beekeeping.

Re: Consolidated hives to 3 mediums today...

I will acknowledge that the probe registered a warmer temperature then ambient. You did not answer my question. How far was the probe from the cluster? How many probes were there? Where were they...

Re: A down side to beekeeping.

I have had my truck parked right in the flight line about 25 ft from my hives and never saw anything like that. Could it be they don't like the car or the one that usually drives it?:D
  16. Re: Getting real tired of melting down capping on the stove..other options??

Id say a microwave is out of the question. Maybe set up a wash tub over a turkey fryer with a 55 gallon steel drum of wax in it? Put in a couple of taps so you could run off the wax to make it...
  17. Re: Getting real tired of melting down capping on the stove..other options??

I was going to mention microwave but keqwow needs to divulge how many pounds of wax or cappings he is processing.

    Re: flat wax foundation

Going along the line that thinner is better I would try one dipping and then roll vertical threads into the wax to give it strength to mount into a frame. I think cheese cloth has too many threads...

    Re: Shaking Things Up

I like it. I have been wondering if the arterial just 75 ft from my apiary has had any beneficial effects due to the vibrations of the 18 wheeler's that go buzzing by. You might not think that the...

    Re: What is raw honey?

According to those that check for adulteration it is not possible to have honey in the comb without pollen. I think that most people would be happy with not going any finer than 400 microns to be...

    Re: What is raw honey?

In my view it could but the size of the filter must be large enough to only take out what would normally not be in the honey in the first place.

Re: Consolidated hives to 3 mediums today...

How far was the probe away from the top of the cluster. Why was there not a probe on each side and the bottom? You insulated the top and choked down the ventilation. Is this the standard hive...

    Re: What is raw honey?

When you extract milk from an udder you don't add anything (debris). When you extract honey from a comb you do.

    Re: What is raw honey?

The particles that contribute to honey being raw are enzymes and pollen possible more. (how is that Barry)
I think most would not argue that honey in a comb is raw. The process of extraction puts...
