  1. Re: little black ants eat varroa off sticky boards

I dont know about SHB larvae, I have not ever seen that beetle in my hives.
  2. Re: little black ants eat varroa off sticky boards

I go after the hive with the brood break in progress with powdersugar dusting once a week for 4 to 6 weeks to at least get the mites on the adult bees down quite a bit. A one,two punch so to speak...
  3. Re: little black ants eat varroa off sticky boards

sorry, I forgot to answer the 2nd question. The mite loads on all the hives with a brood break had around 20 to 30 mites per 24 hour drop, still high. But the mite loads on the hives with no brood...
  4. Re: little black ants eat varroa off sticky boards

The brood breaks were quite long. 3 were hives that swarmed and I let them raise their own queen, around 3 to 4 weeks before I saw signs of brood. 3 hives I split and let the queen-less part of the...
  5. Re: little black ants eat varroa off sticky boards

Oh yes, they do move very fast. I coat the sticky board with a thin film of cooking oil, they cannot move once they fall onto it. The oil also makes wiping off the other crud that gunks up the board...
  6. Re: little black ants eat varroa off sticky boards

Thanks for the confirmation, and I know now my sticky board counts are not accurate when ants are present. The boards are not sticky when new, but just being in the hive they get wax and honey...
  7. Re: little black ants eat varroa off sticky boards

I caught the little black ants in the act this morning, carrying the varroa away. They were not eating them, but marching them away under the sticky board like little leaf cutters. They were very...
  8. little black ants eat varroa off sticky boards

This is just my observation mind you, but consistently when I pull out my sticky boards to check the mite count and there are little black ants on it, there are never varroa when there should be. I...
  9. Re: packages installed on "stocked" deeps, why feed?

Sounds good. Thanks everyone for the great information on this. Sara
  10. Re: packages installed on "stocked" deeps, why feed?

Mr. Beeman, are the ten frame supers mediums or deeps? Glad you mentioned that as I have been wondering if I am providing enough space with one deep 10 frame hive body for the swarms I caught....
  11. Re: packages installed on "stocked" deeps, why feed?

Good thought, they do seem geared up for drawing comb when first hived. Having fully drawn brood and honey supers on hand is like gold I think, timing is everything Im finding out in beekeeping....
  12. Re: packages installed on "stocked" deeps, why feed?

very encouraging Brian, thank you for the extra confirmation on this subject. Sara Alms zone 4
  13. Re: packages installed on "stocked" deeps, why feed?

Thanks Frank. We get plenty of cold snaps in Minnesota in spring, so stimulating early brood production would be a problem. The packages I installed in the "stocked" hives have already given me 2...
  14. Re: packages installed on "stocked" deeps, why feed?

That's how I was looking at it. I am not looking to stimulate early brood production, just wanted to be sure capped honey was adequate for early spring feed for packages. They are all carniolans and...
  15. packages installed on "stocked" deeps, why feed?

I installed 4, 3 lb. packages this spring on equipment from last winters dead outs. Each deep hive body had 4 full frames of honey on the outsides, the other 6 frames were heavy with pollen and empty...

Re: removing drone frames under honey supers

Thanks Michael. I do feel its wasteful to destroy all those drones, however I find many drone brood patches in other areas of the hive, not just in the drone frames. Especially between hive bodies. I...

Re: removing drone frames under honey supers

thanks Adam. I had though of that, but the timing seems off. Partly because of my work load right now, extremely humid weather and my extraction room is not prepared. But I think thats the way to go....

Re: removing drone frames under honey supers

Thanks Michael, will have to watch this carefully. I use your book for reference all the time. (not sure I remember anything on drone frames?). Do you not use them because you dont think they are...

Re: removing drone frames under honey supers

Thank you so much for the thoughts enjambres, that answers what I will do. Hope it will be the last cut out. I think the 24 day "rule" is for the empty frame method, because they have to draw the wax...

removing drone frames under honey supers

Hi.I hope this is the right spot to ask this, I posted it also on the natural beekeeping forum. I have been using drone frames(not commercial, but the ones you make yourself from empty frames). I...

    Re: sweet clover differences

I kind of figured they will be mixed. Also the basswood trees and black locust trees will be blooming soon, so it will be a mix for sure unless I figure out the timing skills of supering. Thanks for...

    sweet clover differences

I have an acre of solid yellow sweet clover ready to bloom in a couple weeks, followed by about another acre of white sweet clover to bloom a few weeks later. Is there any difference in the honey...
