    Re: tiny jumping bugs?

Thanks everyone. But so far no on the snow fleas, and no on the flea beetles.
I maybe shouldn't have described them as bugs. They are not elongated at all. If it wasn't for the size (about 2x too...

    tiny jumping bugs?

This is my first winter as a beekeeper, and I ma anxious to see the bees come through.
So far so good, I see them come out on sunny days, and there are usually new dead ones on the landing board...

    Re: Combining swarms

Just to close this out, here is what I ended up doing:

A local mentor suggested, since it was basically just 2 frames that I wanted to add to the hive, to prop up a board in front of the hive,...
  4. Bees roughing each other up at the entrance

    what are these guys doing?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2EqkPqQwgw&feature=youtu.be (sorry, a bit unfocused)

At first I thought they were fighting off intruders, or kicking out diseased bees,...

    Combining swarms

I have had 1 hive swarm 4 times. caught all four. swarm 1 is doing fine, swarm two looks to be queenless, swarm 3 I gave away, and swarm 4 is doing great too.

after catching swarm 2 I gave them a...
  6. Re: Swarm -> Nuc -> merge into existing hives?

No, I have a feeling something is wrong with the original hive. I was actually thinking of combining it with the 2 previous swarm hives

That was exactly what I had in mind.
    Wait some 10...
  7. Swarm -> Nuc -> merge into existing hives?

one of my hives is super productive, and I must be mismanaging it severely (1st year), it's swarmed for the 4th time today, and the swarm is still decent size. More than a 3lb package I am guessing....

    Rearranging frames

    1st year.
I have a new hive from a package installed on 4/29 (5.5 weeks ago), queen released on 5/2 (5 weeks ago), on 5/13 there were 5 frames drawn, lots of nectar, 1 frame with capped brood. ...

Re: Are they wanting to swarm?

Yes, you mean in the original hive? I think not having enough open cells might be the issue (someone else mentioned honeybound) I probably should have supered already.
Then again there are at least...

Re: Are they wanting to swarm?

Can't really give you much advise, as I am in the same situation, first year beekeeper, got a nuc in April.
I might be a couple weeks ahead of you though. The hive based on the 5 frame nuc swarmed...

Re: Are they cleaning each other?

I see the same thing happening. Started after I did a powdered sugar dusting for mite control. So grooming sounds plausible. But it's been happening since, for the last 8 days. Would've thought...

    Re: Feeder jars leakage

    Thanks,
Good suggestions, I already had them on 3 full, 1 empty jar, and yes they go through about 1 quart a day.
I guess I'll try going to only one or two jars. The inverted cardboard box for...

    Feeder jars leakage

I am feeding my just installed (2 weeks) hive with 4 inverted mason jars on top. I noticed that on the warmer days syrup leaks out. Actually flows out the entrance at the bottom.
    I guess it kind of...
