    Swarm captured

I captured a swarm that one of my hives threw off. The bees had swarmed to a rafter in my greenhouse. I got most of the bees, but apparently not the queen--no evidence of egg-laying in the hive. Two...

I saw a black beetle in my hive

It was smaller than a ladybug--maybe half the size. Is it an shb? I live in Delaware. Do they go that far north?

They drew it out like crazy.

The entire four boxes are jammed with brood and honey.

So would making the hive deeper solve that problem?

Michael Bush says that deeper hives put more strain on the comb. I bought cypress 1x12s for the sides and ends, so I could do 11" deep.

    Another mistake--how to fix it?

I've been reading here about top bar hives and in other forums on using foundationless frames. I foolishly decided to combine the two in Langstroth hives.

As a result, I have a thriving hive with...

    Sticky: Caught my first swarm

Got a call from Middletown DE about a football-sized swarm in a shrub. Cut the branch and it fell into my cardboard nuc. It was so easy. 19709
  7. tops of comb built too wide, filled with honey

I'm having problems in all my hives. In some hives I'm using HSC interspersed with frame tops with starter strips. In some I'm using starter strips alone.

The problem is that the bees are building...

I think perhaps I am missing something. I have SBB on my regular hives. They have screen on the top and a sticky board underneath. Are we talking about just screening--no sticky board? Would an SBB...

  10. Relative benefits of nucs and swarm traps for catching swarms

I've been looking at the papier mache swarm traps sold by brushy mt., but I was wondering whether a styrofoam nuc might not make as good a swarm trap.

    Opinions?

Some people say that you should cut out the drone comb to reduce varroa mite populations. Michael, is that just not necessary? I'd rather just leave the drone comb, but I don't want to treat, so I'm...

How can I tell if robbing is happening?

One of my hives is very noisy, and when I opened it up without gloves this afternoon, I got stung instantly. (Good news is that I'm not allergic--I was afraid I might be.)

I see a lot of activity...

Sorry I took so long to answer. Yes, I foolishly broke up the brood box by inserting undrawn frames. The bees did ok, though.

    Wax color

My nuc bees are drawing comb like gangbusters, but it's a dark tan, almost brown color. Is that a problem?
