Re: When do we check the hives???????

You also need to be cognizant of a honey super filling up however ... so, if there's all of a sudden a very strong flow and they fill 10 frames in a week, but you're only checking every 3 weeks that...

    Apivar for medium brood chambers

I know Apivar suggests something like 2 strips per brood chamber ... is that the same for medium size brood chambers as well? (or could I get away with 1 per brood chamber?).

Re: when to put on super

How will they fill it with syrup if you're not feeding them?
  4. Re: 1 Frame of bees and a Queen = hopelessly lost?

There was definitely a mite problem as I described in my first post ... I treated with MAQs (full dose) a few weeks ago, but haven't checked the numbers since (not enough bees to even do that now!)....
  5. Re: 1 Frame of bees and a Queen = hopelessly lost?

I also suspect there may be a brood disease present, possibly EFB. Some of the brood had perforated caps and the larvae inside was a bit suspect in some of them ... I sent a sample to the lab to get...
  6. 1 Frame of bees and a Queen = hopelessly lost?

My dwindling hive has just one frame of bees left and a very obvious marked queen. They've been dwindling for weeks now since I found the mite levels very high and treated 3 weeks ago or so. I...

    Re: Will a swarm, swarm?

Yes, likely what happened is the swarm left but the foragers didn't get the memo as they were out in the field ... they return to the hive and are hopelessly lost but stay there (probably due to the...

    Re: removing bees from supers

I shake and brush too, but know many folks who use bee escapes successfully.

    Re: lots of problems

The supersedure cells are likely just meaningless queen cups.

What do u mean eggs that have dried up? A picture might help.

Re: Dwindling, dying hive ... now what?

Yes, the full 2 strip dose. It was a bit warmer than normal, but I think still under the thresholds. It was probably low to mid 20's (Celsius) and I think the package said it shouldn't be 29...

Re: Dwindling, dying hive ... now what?

I did see eggs ... but she never has been a fantastic layer (not the greatest/strongest of brood patterns).

    Is this chalkbrood?

I'm trying to identify the disease/syndrome/issue I noticed during an inspection today ... this is in the stronger of my two hives.

Dwindling, dying hive ... now what?

I found both my hives had high mite counts a couple weeks ago, and treated with MAQs. The numbers in my weaker hive were lower than expected, but still quite a number of bees ... today, 2 weeks...

Re: Are They Thinking of Swarming?!

definitely orientation fights. U can see the pattern they're making quite well actually, sort of like a figure eight.

    Re: Spring treatment for Varroa

I treated both my hives a week ago with MAQs, did an inspection 7 days later (today) and everything looks great ... queens still around and eggs present.

Why are the bees doing this? [Video]

There was a small number of bees clustered around the entrance of my swarm trap earlier today, and now they are doing this:

  17. Tiny after swarm or scout bees bringing in pollen?

I thought I had a swarm in my trap, bees were in and out for a few days, some bees bringing in some pollen ... then I cracked it open and there were just a handful of bees on the drawn comb I had in...

I happened to have a swarm trap in the back of my pickup truck that I was going to move to some other location, and this morning I went out and there were a few bees buzzing around the entrance. I...

I'm a new beekeeper (got 2 new Zealand packages 1 year ago) with 2 overwintered hives. I went into this gig hoping to go "treatment free", started with small cell plastic foundation (and...

Re: Clean off of burr comb?

I've never understood the need for incessant burr comb cleaning. To me, it's pointless ... unless it's getting in the way somehow. Bees just build it up again anyway, in many cases as a ladder...

    Re: New hive swarmed!

I'd do a sugar roll and check for mite levels to discount that ...

Bees like a certain amount of drone comb (around 15%), and will build that everywhere possible if you're using foundation ......
  23. Re: Western Washington/Oregon/British Columbia Beekeepers 2015

We're definitely 2-3 weeks early on everything this year for sure ... i'm in South Delta BC. Blueberries are in full bloom, but no blackberry blooms yet that I've noticed.

    I only overwintered 2...

    Re: Round two

not sure what you mean by a stone on top ... what do you need that for, other than if it's extremely windy in your area and you're worried about the hive cover blowing off?
