  1. Re: Are you willing to take the odfrank swarm catching challenge?

My dad was a restaurant/bar/lounge owner and we always had wooden cases from Drambuie and Grand Marnier around our house. They probably just use cardboard these days but I've often thought if I had...

Odfrank, is that made from some old wine crates?

Re: My new Prototype bottom board

Years ago I had many masonite inner covers. They would always sag in our humidity and then get propolized to the top bars. Masonite, in my experience, is not suitable for use in hives.

    Re: wax

I use a crock pot to melt wax for my various uses, mostly coat top bars of foundationless frames. It gets hot enough. Most folks that I've heard of waxing foundation use a small paint roller or...
  5. Re: Anyone have plans for a moving screen?

You didn't need to clarify or edit for me. I understood what you meant. Sometimes the bees just don't like it when you haul them down a bumpy road and they'll want to take it out on you when you...
  6. Re: Epigenetics, Lamarckism, Mendelism, oh my!

I agree with the first sentence. It essentially agrees with my point that culling is your most effective tool. Keep breeding bad anything and all you will have is bad. Cull your bad stock and...
  7. Re: Epigenetics, Lamarckism, Mendelism, oh my!

Not necessarily. I've had bees that produced a good load of honey but couldn't survive the winter, putting me on the treadmill of buying bees to watch them die. It's very possible, maybe even...

Re: My new Prototype bottom board

Fancy. Defintely will work. Looks like a bunch of work to produce. I like the Ross design at myoldtools.com. It's made of 2X4s and you can put those things in your will if you use the right...
  9. Re: Anyone have plans for a moving screen?

I'm with Mark on this one. A hive closure (as I was first told they were called a long time ago by the old beekeeper previously mentioned) or moving screen allows you to close off the hive without...
  10. Re: Anyone have plans for a moving screen?

Huh? What do SBBs have to do with a hive closure or robber screen?
  11. Re: Anyone have plans for a moving screen?

I build my hive closures with scrap wood. I model them after a hive closure that came on the first hive I ever purchased from a man in Rockwall, TX named "Bo". I think his company name was Besharse...
  12. Re: Epigenetics, Lamarckism, Mendelism, oh my!

There have been other threads along breeding discussion in the past. The breeder has three basic tools at his disposal. They would be crossbreeding, inbreeding/line breeding, which are different...
  13. Re: Epigenetics, Lamarckism, Mendelism, oh my!

    Glad you did.
  14. Re: Epigenetics, Lamarckism, Mendelism, oh my!

But are we northern Europeans genetically destined to be be taller or could we with a few successive generations of malnutrition revert to those small suits of armor in the castles I like to visit? ...

    Re: WTK Metal Disk Entrances

I just drill a weap hole in the bottom. It's not unusual for us to get humidity close to 100% and condensation can be a pain.

    Re: Are these swarm cells?

I"ll concur. Just because you have queen cells eastablished doesn't necessarily mean the bees are going to swarm. It only matters if you see a worm in them swimming in jelly or if they're sealed. ...

Re: One of My Hives is Mean

Why is AHB hard to get rid of? Splitting and requeening is normal beekeeping management and not particularly difficult.

Re: Trap or cutout plan - oak tree

"Do you think you can cut the trunk off below the hive? Looks like they're pretty close to the ground."

That's why I asked that question earlier. I've seen many a hive actually under the tree and...

    Re: WTK Metal Disk Entrances

Do you have a reason for wanting the entrance level with the bottom of the box?

I"m thinking a cut or star lock washer might be a good investment but I'll wait to see if I run into that first.
  23. Re: "No Treatment of Honey Bees Report" by StevenG

Great news! I do hope that my fortunes are as good as yours but will not count on it yet. Old man winter may still have a trick or two up his sleeve. So far, it is looking very good for me as well.
  24. Re: comb honey without special frames???

People use extra thin foundation in shallow supers for comb honey. There's no reason you cannot do the same with foundationless frames or top bars. Save a bunch of loot to boot.
  25. Re: Are you willing to take the odfrank swarm catching challenge?

Now that hurts being as yur Giants beat my Rangers in the classic two years ago.
