    Re: Bees and guineas....need advice

Top entrances on your hives should keep the the bees safe from any possible guinea predation.

    Re: Wiggle room.

I keep the frames tight together and arrange them a bit closer to the cold side than the sunny side of the hive. I find my bees more often build bridge comb on the warm side than the cold side if the...
  3. Re: How/when to fix "offset" comb on foundationless deep frames?

The brood on that larger piece of comb is quite valuable to your new hive. Also, since the comb is straight, and aligned with the frame it is almost perfect and will help the bees draw straight combs...

Re: Dumbest thing you ever bought for beekeeping?

    great idea for a thread!

-Heavy canvas gloves/gauntlets; been in my toolbox for three years and I haven't used them since dumping my first package, the first 5 minutes into becoming a beekeeper.

    Here's what I have used. http://www.durablesupply.com/popamafipc.html

Re: Ever seen this? Worker locks onto queen's wing.

Never seen this before, but I have a couple of queens with tattered wings. I assume they are tattered because of similar behavior inside the hive.

Re: Attracting bees to fruit trees

MikeFoster- I understand where you're coming from. My bees are in a friend's small orchard (apple & cherry) and we rarely see a bee on his trees. With 6 hives, 3 of them booming this year, I thought...

    Re: 8 frame vs 10 frame: and....go!

8 frame boxes with 9 1.25" frames inside. All the benefits of 8 frame hives and almost as much surface area as 10 frames.

    Re: Adding deep to bottom

Another option is to move a frame with brood down there. The bees will follow and begin to expand sideways as long as the colony is big enough.

    Re: Working naked!!!???

Sounds like I'm an outlier but I've gradually set aside sting protection. From gloves, to long sleeve shirt, to veil, to smoking before opening the hive it all seems mostly unecessary at this point....

If Skagit bees are anything like Bellingham bees, they'll be happy as long as it comes from a microbrewery.

    Re: Damaged wing?

I don't know if it would. There is not much fluid on a strip to be spread into the honey and since it's legal to use with supers on they probably don't think bees will move it throughout the hive.

Funny, I had the same thought. The bears I'm used to aren't so broad in the shoulders. Those East Coast bears must work out.

    Re: Are landing boards...necessary?

I build my own bottom boards and have never used landing boards but some people say they increase honey production.

I'm happy to have never had to deal with this but I hear that a few drops of Lemon Grass Oil around the rim will encourage the bees to use your preferred water source.

No, if they sting me it's because I've been to rough or impatient, opening the hive on a damp day.
