    Re: Colored syrup

Its a fun way to see what is happening. Amazing sometimes to see just where each batch ends up.

Re: Pound of dead bees in front of each hive!

I would guess its pesticide related.
  5. Re: Well, rain or distilled water for mixing syrup

Don't overthink this "problem". Any water short of seawater is OK. Bees tend to like salty water so borewater, rainwater or tapwater are all OK.

Re: Package bees not interested in previous comb

Don't worry. They will use it eventually.

    Re: Stung...learned a lesson

Playing with the entrance is always "fun". Its where the guard bees set up shop. Anything more than pushing in a couple of shims needs smoke.

    Re: My First Sting!

Not a pro but the first few stings react then the reaction drops off. These days I hardly reactto a sting, get the stinger out quickly, smoke it and it forgottwn in a few minutes. Stings to the face...

Re: Rough start for this first year!

New hive, yesterday, get rid of old hive. Forget poisons in your hive, they do nasty things to bees. Feed them well and you may get away with it.

    Re: Queenless Hive

Don't be afraid to keep feeding that hive. What resources the few foragers bring in will soon be used for brood rearing. Keep some food on them so they can really raise lots of brood and still lay...

    Re: A new bad invention

I have tops on my hives like Lauri with a quilt on top. Great for controlling heat and showing guests the bees. One of these would be fantastic as you would basically convert your hive to an...

Re: Over-confidence, or over-stupid? (smoking bees)

Always wear a veil. End of lesson one. Always have a lit smoker and give the entrance a puff or two. End of lesson two. Don't get over confident. End of lesson three.

Re: Day one - new nuc, TONS of beetles

No guarantees on the SHB but I have found keeping the frames closed up together is a must. Any gap in the hive must be large enough for the bees to patrol. If there is a gap too small for the bees...

Keep us posted on the flow super but now you need to build them up so the super disappears for a while

Re: What to do with dead bees head down in comb?

200 bees is probably not viable but try putting them in a small nuc in the same position with an extremely reduced entrance. That would be their best hope. Do you have access to any sealed brood?
  23. Re: Well I'm officially a Beek!!! I picked up 3 packages today.

Good idea to get rid of the super. Is that a flow hive?

I do crust and strain and have no problems with comb building. If a flow is on they build a frame in a day or two. I also progressively harvest as its a big job by hand. Looking at building a honey...
