  1. Re: How everyone's Honey Flow Looking like This Year.

So far it's been the best spring since I started in 2010. My hive is up over 140 pounds so far this year! The cold winter must have been good for flowers.
  2. Re: How do you know if there is a 'flow' going on?

Here is how I tell. The gain in weight correlates directly to what's blooming. I gain weight when the locus blooms, linen blooms, goldenrod blooms. When nothing blooms I don't gain...

Re: Unbelievable queen laying like mad

Unfortunately, I did not catch the swarm. However, the hive is still pretty active, and has gained 18 pounds in the last two days. I have a medium and deep I am supering with. I am up well over...

Re: Unbelievable queen laying like mad

Well, they finally did swarm. I guess that might have been preparation for their swarming. The video was filmed on the 17th and they swarmed on the 21st. I lost 17 lbs of bees!

    Unbelievable queen laying like mad

I live in the Chicago area and it's been quite a rough winter for me. I lost two of my four hives. But one hive I have is really unbelievable. This hive made it very strong out of the winter. ...

    Re: Opinions needed on split

I am really bad at finding my queen, and just don't want to introduce my new queen to a hive with my old queen in it. Is it really that easy to just listen and determine a queenless hive?

Re: What did you learn this winter?

Two of my four hives made it.

I learned that weak hives going into the fall don't make it through the winter
I learned that strong hives, insulation, adequate ventilation... still might not make...

I'm wondering why you had so much mold. Did you leave an upper entrance on the hives?

I get to Jamaica a couple times a year. A few trips ago I purchased some logwood honey. Very interesting! Is this a common nectar source?

two out of four are dead. One hive was weak going into winter is dead. Swarm hive that seemed strong is dead too. Other two hives seem strong. Dead hives are full of capped honey.

    Ragweed

Do bees harvest pollen from ragweed? I know that some folks will say yes, and some will say no. I guess what I'm asking is has anybody ever seen a bee harvesting pollen from ragweed?

    Thanks!
