    Re: mineral oil

    I tried it.
Plain mineral oil did NOT work for me.
I tried mixing it with thymol. That really pissed the Bees off big time and did not work well for me.
Now I use OAV and Formic acid. (The...

Re: Considering switching to Oxalic Acid

An empty tea light cup works well as a vaporization tray. Push with your thumb on the underside of the cup to form a small indentation, creating a place for the OA. Punch some small holes in the side...
  4. Re: oxalic acid treated hives with high mite counts

Sound like perfect conditions for a FA treatment. It is puzzling that you don't seem to get an efficiency in the high 90% range.
  5. Re: oxalic acid treated hives with high mite counts

For FA to work well you need a temp over 20 deg.C but not above 30 deg.C. At the moment we don't have that and are not likely to get it,so we have been recommended to double up on our pads or...

    Re: Honey Dew

Yes, it does sound like honeydew from "Oak." It is often and strong flow and usually ends very abruptly. Since you like the taste all is good.

    Re: Honey Dew

    Taste.

It tastes very different to floral honey, quite an acquired taste. It is usually a dark honey and often is quite runny. The first time I tasted it I thought it was inedible, and the thought...

  12. Re: Gear for melting out honey directly from frames

Mike do you have "Honey by the Ton" by Oliver Field from northern bee books. Quite good actually but the last three pages have a description and drawings of a honey and wax melting tray plus a honey...
  13. Re: What's she gathering from my cucumber leaves?

Why not pollen? That dust on the leaves could be wind blown pollen from another source.

Re: Honey in the Comb by Carl Killion

Thank you for that, I got in from Amazon Germany. Looking forward to reading it.
  15. Re: Gear for melting out honey directly from frames

"Wax starterstrips" efficient. Use a small strip of wood as a starterstrip. Works just as well as wax, is only done once at the time one puts the frame together. The frame is ready to use straight...

Re: Considering switching to Oxalic Acid

I talked to a German guy who swears by one of those aromatherapy vaporizers, the ones that use a small candle. He puts an empty super on the hive, measures out the dose of OA into the vaporizers pan,...

OA is cheap enough, so sit up wind and try it out :D
  18. Re: oxalic acid treated hives with high mite counts

One thing I would suggest for those trying this for the first time, Do a dummy run before treating any hives. You can time how long it takes to vaporize the OA and you can see if all the OA gets...

    Re: Apply FA on nucs?

Its a nice dispenser, it was developed to make it easier and safer to use FA. Before that it was common to use medicine bottles with a plastic dropper (like essential oils have) placed over a kitchen...

    Re: Apply FA on nucs?

New guidelines for formic acid where I live are 200ml of 60% formic for double deep and 140ml for a single, we use a dispenser that works slowly, 4 to 5 days for that amount of acid and causes no...
