One of my very robust hives swarmed last Sunday, 5/6/2012.
I am in NW PA, and it was probably in the low to mid-60s.
Sounds like they were robbed?
We have about 6 black walnuts, very tall and straight, in our backyard. There are in two areas grouped in sets of three. Two Amish gentlemen stopped early in spring and offered about $200/tree. My...
Mine are doing the same thing, so thanks for posting this before I had a chance.
I've had it a couple of times following yellow jacket stings--not yet from a bee sting.
What is the white stuff--mine looked like that, too.
I won't have any bees left if they are mine!!! :o
I understood, I think what I wrote was in error.
Just an update, my husband told me this morning that he spotted the swarm again, on the same tree, last evening. About the same size, according to...
I guess this is part of learning--I didn't know they don't move that far from home, but I guess that makes sense. This has been a fascinating experience so far. It really doesn't look like the...
I was afraid of that--this was (and still looks like) a very robust hive--and that was a medium sized swarm. I am now afraid they might all be doomed, since fall and winter are at the doorstep.
Thanks Oldtimer.
Yes, there are eggs.
When I went to peek at my hives after work today, I was surprised to see the queen dancing around on the landing entrance of one of them. Definitely the queen, not a drone--she was slim, small eyes,...
Will one sign of skunks possibly be dead bees in front of the hive? I see what I believe to be a muddy paw print on my white hive.
I've also noticed, although they may be coming in with less pollen, the pollens they are collecting right now seem to be darker in nature--not some of the bright yellows of earlier in the...
Ditto, they are my first pick too.
I am a complete new-bee, but will guess. Maybe newly hatched bees taking orientation flights?
I have also found Millers to be reasonable and have very good customer service.
I read two of Susan Hubbell's books--A Country Year and A Book of Bees and How to Keep Them. She got me hooked and her books are filled with great information. I kept reading after that and...
Will other animals drink as well--I was mainly worried about a stray cat that might wander on to it...but I did just buy some fly bait and coke this weekend.
Steve,
Carry your epi-pen with you and please go speak with your physician. That sounds like a dangerous sort of reaction--I don't think I'd take any chances. Get some advice from a doc.
I also took carpet tack strips, cut them to size and put several in front of and around the hive. Easy to move for inspections.
Is it then time to feed them again?
What is "honey bound"?
Our neighbor just told us he will be fogging for mosquitos. He is about an acre away from my hives. I am terrified this is going to kill off my two hives. If he fogs at dusk (which he said he...
