Coward??? Anyone working bees should wear whatever makes them feel comfortable. I don't wear gloves most of the time, but I keep a pair in my truck. You never know when you'll open a hot hive.
Screen the top and entrance, leave the feeder off or empty while moving. Closing the hive in early morning or late evening will make sure you get most of the foragers. The hive should not be closed...
Same here in WV. Sumac is just finished here and they have been working it hard. As long as they are bringing it in I'm not going to complain. They will work the clover, as it will still be blooming...
The best thing I have done is to get started keeping bees. The worst waiting til I was 35 years old. The dummest was picking up my first hive, and setting it on the tailgate to screen the entrance....
Are you sure that there isn't another queen in there? You didn't state if this was an establshed hive or a package. Virgin queens are sometimes in with the workers in a package.
I say go for it with a 2 or 3 pound package. I would almost guarantee that after watching them a while you will be wanting an outside hive. I started a few years ago with 2 hives. I decided then to...

OK I want to know how you all train your bees to swarm on the ground. Mine seem to like it at the top of the tallest trees.

First I would like to say that I think all of you guys do a first rate job on this forum. Thanks.
I am usually just a lurker reading whatever is posted. I have only kept bees for 3 years now, so I...
If I recall correctly this hive was abandoned/neglected for several years. Right? The smaller size could be from old comb being used. Builup of debris over the years making the cells smaller. It...

I had 6 hives in Washington County Ohio going into fall. Had to combine 2 and lost one this winter. This hive had a loe pop starting into winter. Their stores 80 lbs saved another hive that for some...
Our town is making plans to spray for mosquitos. I live on the outskirts along a creek. What do they normally use to spray and what do I have to do to keep my bees safe?
Check La's Apiary law. In WV and Ohio it is unlawful to keep honeybees in hives that the frames cannot be manipulated. I assume that about every state has similar laws.
