Sticky: Re: Please Post your Swarm Dates?

Got a call and picked up a nice swarm last night. I can't say I remember swarms this early in the year in my part of Wisconsin.

BeeAware... How do you plant yours? Last year I planted using a broadcast spreader..... worked okay, but not great. I picked up a grain drill this spring, but it doesn't say what settings to use...

    Re: Mellowing Hot Hive?

    Thanks

Thats what I will do if I have to... but these are survivor genetics, so if I can mellow them out, and keep some of the survivor genes, that would be better.

    Re: Mellowing Hot Hive?

Well, I split them today. Man was that a fight. I was getting so ticked, I almost went and got the gasoline and a match. After some work, I did get them split, however.... I was not able to find...

    Re: Mellowing Hot Hive?

I guess I will give it a try. And yes, the bees do run all over the place. Maybe I will split it again, that way at least one of the hives will be making a new queen, and it should make it easier...

    Mellowing Hot Hive?

I had a bad winter and lost all but one hive. The hive that survived, was a swarm that I caught the year before. They were darker than my other bees, and a bit more aggressive, but not too bad. ...

I'd like to know more about this too. Last night I was cleaning up a dead out that I believed died from nosema. I scrapped all the wax off the frames (plastic frames) then sprayed them with the...

Re: Question for the trap out experts

Just to clarify a couple of things. The bees haven't been there long. A few weeks maybe. So the wall probably isn't filled with bee stuff.

The home owners have said they do not want to open...

    Re: trapout question

I would just put a frame of open brood and some eggs in the hive next to the tree. Then the bees from the tree will come in and take care of the brood. The queen is not needed. They will make...

How do you use bees wax to affix the screen? Do you melt it at the location of the trapout? Also, doesn't it stain the bricks? Thats one of the problems. I can't do anything that will...

Question for the trap out experts

Below is a picture of a trap out someone would like me to do. The arrow leads to the entrance that the bees are using. As you can see this is going to be pretty difficult to get a screen cone on. ...

Re: One hive is a mess - advice, please!

Sounds like you may have lost the queen on the weak hive. They bees were replacing her with those queen cells. They need young eggs or day old larva to make a new queen. I recommend taking a frame...

    Re: High swarm retrieval secrets?

Thats true you can't get all of the swarms, and there needs to be some wild ones left for the future. Just think of all those cut outs and bee trees that we would not get to do.
