Re: How many hives are "enough"?

I started with 2 hives my first year, added one split during the season and wintered 3. Then last Spring I added 2 packages and split hives for a total of 7. I have 4 more packages coming, and that...

Re: When to hive new packages?

Did you give them syrup or sugar to eat? I usually give them 1/2 of a pollen pattie on the top bars and syrup in a top feeder for new packages.

Great to see another Iowa Beekeeper!

I have seven hives, and 4 more packages coming in May. Good luck with your bees!

    Re: Honey Extractors

I like the 18 frame unit. I keep 9 medium frames in my supers, so I can extract 2 full supers at a time and that usually gets me a 5 gallon pail of honey.

I'm sure you will find that everyone likes what they have. I have the 18 frame Mann Lake and it works great......I would buy one again.

Re: Varroa in a 2 week old hive

The best thing I learned my first year was "calm down". I thought everything that happened was a disaster.....my bees are in their third year and still alive.....despite my over reactions the first...

Re: Western Bee Supply - outrageous shipping costs!

Free freight or not, its the total cost per box that matters. If the freight is free and the cost per box is less, I'd still call it a good deal. Who cares if its free freight or me paying the...

    Re: Best ventilated bee suit?

Check Mann Lakes discounted items. I bought an extra vented suit for $75. I have used my first one for two years and it should last two more years.
  11. Re: which clear stain to choose to paint some supers?

I burned some pine, finished with 6-7 coats of Marine varnish and they looked great. After one year outside, the finish seems to be mostly worn off. It did look nice, but I will probably paint them...

    Re: Hive entrance direction

Thanks, Vance! My first group of hives face south to protect against the Winter wind, out of the Northwest. I may try some east or southeast facing as that should work just as well.

I currently have all my hives facing to the South. I have run out of room to go wider, so am going to make another row of hive stands. Would you put another row of hives in front of these, facing...

Re: Bending aluminum for telescoping covers?

The two long sides went well with a Harbor Freight sheet metal bender. How do you use it on the short sides after you have the bends done on the long sides?

I used Apivar 1 year ago and Apivar last Fall, so I should probably change it up. I was thinking MAQS might be the next solution to try. What do you suggest?

    Re: Hello from South Dakota

I would suggest building a couple Langstroth hives first, because it will be easier to get help from other local beekeepers. Then build yourself a top bar hive to play with.
