    Re: New Composite Langstroth

drlonzo - Thanks for the link.

I am not sure if the Best hive is available in the U.S., but the website shows a "Double D Hive" which includes two deeps and two mediums (with frames, I think) for...

    Re: Veil types?

If by "hooded veil" you mean a Sheriffs veil, then the problems you describe are due to a bad execution by Mann Lake. I have a Sheriffs veil on my Ultrabreeze and it is great. Bottom line is I have...

Is there a website? Will they be available in the U.S.?
  4. Re: Sizes: Commercial Lumber vs Traditional Lumber

This comes down to "theory" vs "real world," IMHO.

Lots, and I mean lots, of hives are made from 3/4" boards. Yet, no one is blaming their dead hive on a missing 1/4" of pine.

    While, in...

Re: How do the scout bees work?

Another vote for "Honeybee Democracy." While the book didn't add much to my practical knowledge for the day-to-day work in my apiary, it is probably the best book on honeybees, or any kind of...
  6. Re: Oxalic Acid Vaporizer with Temp Controller

Automatic power shut-off and a light indicating that the OA has completed vaporizing are nice features!
  7. Re: What sliding compound miter saw should I buy?

My DeWalt doesn't have a laser - it has a light above the blade which will cast a shadow of the blade on the work piece. The shadow of the blade is where the blade will cut, and even shows the exact...

"The back of the hive is about an inch higher than the front."

Way more slope than necessary, BTW.

Re: How fast do your bees drink 1:1 syrup?

I've been feeding my bees 1:1 for about 4 weeks. In that time most of my 11 hives have taken about 1.5 gallons of syrup. A couple a little more, and a couple a little less. The largest consumer...

Re: Spring feeding - for how long?

I had planned to use the Demaree method ( http://countryrubes.com/images/Swarm_Prevention_By_Demaree_Method.pdf ) to control swarming this year, but this sounds like a really good option, too.
  13. Re: What sliding compound miter saw should I buy?

I've got this and have been very happy with it. It is my main saw until I finally get a table saw.

Like others have said, I'd chuck the robber screen unles you do see signs of robbin. I'd additionally keep the entrance small. Ideally, you want to see a slight traffic jam at the entrance.

Re: Ventilation for the top of your hive

Lol! Ants are usually not a problem in my part of Colorado, but they are even less of a problem with the hives on the roof.

Re: Ventilation for the top of your hive

    1) The hives are out of the way so no one ever walks into the flight path including even...

Until that study comes out, I...
