    Re: Foundationless and Leveling

If you're going the foundationless route, you may as well do it right to start with. Yes, get some shims and level out your hive. It will make your life a happier one.

Re: The Miracle of Going Foundationless!

Totally agree. The image you posted with the frame of capped honey + stick looked like a medium to my eyes. I tried foundationless with deeps, and it was a hassle, hence the move to mediums.

Re: The Miracle of Going Foundationless!

This is totally unnecessary. I turn my comb over all the time. 1 year old comb is very solid, and if it's connected to the frame at a few places, it's pretty darn solid. I've been all mediums +...

    Re: Honey Biz

I sell in some retail locations. If you sell under $35,000 worth, you are a cottage food industry and don't need a commercial kitchen. Above that dollar amount, you need to find a suitable facility...

    Re: Extracting "Foundation-less" Comb

Maxant 20 frame extractor. No issues. All foundationless. I've had blowouts, but I usually know which ones are going to pop. Getting the spinner balanced is also important.

    Re: Foundationless Frames

Mann Lake frames made for foundation. Pop the wedge piece off, run a bead of glue in there, and jam it in. I use a hammer to get the piece in there sometimes. Once the bees draw wax + the wood...

Re: How Many Frames of Pollen Do They Need?

Yes! ;) Sqkcrk, I know the old adage that if you ask 3 beeks a question, you'll get 4-5 answers. I am in line with the philosophy that my bees know more than me regarding hive management. Way...

Re: The Miracle of Going Foundationless!

I haven't found this to be the case at all. When I pop in an empty frame in the brood nest, I get perfect worker cell comb on the entire frame. They do crown, which can make it crowded. That said,...

Re: How Many Frames of Pollen Do They Need?

Come on guy, keep it in the positive. That's why I am asking a question. I know it's still cold and crappy in NY, so I will try and send you some warm California love and energy your way.

Re: The Miracle of Going Foundationless!

You hear a lot of people trash talk those of us who go foundationless. I don't get it. Seems like beeks are pretty "thrifty" individuals all around. It saves money, and time, which is money. I...

Re: How Many Frames of Pollen Do They Need?

All my queens are locally raised for the last two seasons. That said, they originally came from Oliverez Queens, and I am sure the Almonds have an influence ;)

How Many Frames of Pollen Do They Need?

I've got a colony that has backfilled the broodnest with pollen. Should I take out all but 2 pollen frames to leave in the #2 & #9 spaces? How much do they really need if they have such a surplus....
  13. Re: First grafting session of 2014 a success!!

Nice! I'll be doing my first round this week. What are your plans for the queens?

Re: Not Sure - Swarm Cells or Supercedure?

Well, I had one of my colonies swarm. I timed it just right and showed up around 10:30am. They must have just flew the coop. I had 2 colonies that were at swarm strength. One I split up with the...

Sticky: Re: Please Post your Swarm Dates?

3/18/2014 - One of my colonies swarmed and I was lucky to be on hand to hive them. Big swarm, maybe 5-6 pounds of bees. Branch was knee high, about 20 yards away from hive body. 65 degrees at...

    Re: What happened to Lauri?

Referring to this. Seemed like her post was responding to veiled jabs, and I was saying it's sad if that's the case. Moving on.

    Re: What happened to Lauri?

NewbeeinNH and Acebird, you've pretty much missed my point. Of course she's inspirational. I agree with you both. It's the fact that the long response from her was in defense of other whisperings...

    Re: What happened to Lauri?

I find it sad that Lauri had to spend so long constructing a retort to curmudgeonly old men, instead of something more constructive. I don't care if she won the lottery! She loves what she does and...
  19. Re: What are the limits to growth? Expanding apiary.

Depends on your set of friends! $100K is still a lot of money to people out here. But it is strange to go on a Saturday bike ride and see the Ferrari club filling up at the Chevron, while being...
  20. Re: What are the limits to growth? Expanding apiary.

I run 30 hives when things are good. I've built up over the last two years, and maybe if I looked at all my receipts I would get a shock  Anyway, that's my magic happy number. I am all mediums...
  21. Re: What are the limits to growth? Expanding apiary.

"A fool and his money are easily parted." Wow. It's farming, not real estate! I didn't mean to come off the wrong way, but I just can't imagine being a new beek and buying into 100's or 1000's of...
  22. Re: What are the limits to growth? Expanding apiary.

What are you spending your money on?

Really, you've known a few new, 1st year beekeepers who've dropped $100K? Also, there are plenty of non well-heeled semi-aristocrats up here as well. ...
  23. Re: What are the limits to growth? Expanding apiary.

Drawn comb is a HUGE! I finally have a surplus after 3 years, and man does it help. I started out with a similar mentality, and my magic number was 35-40 hives. Boy did I have an intro into...
