Re: Honey Hive Farms package experience

Never worked with him but do like his perspective on beekeeping. Nice guy too.

Some people refuse to change or spend an extra 10 minutes and a couple cents to provide a superior product.

Re: Honey Hive Farms package experience

In most packages you can blow on the queen cage to get the bees off it while it is still in the package. You should be able to see the queen then. I do this as a matter of course and have never had a...

Re: Bees swarm 4 days after installation.

yes, as the previous frames get filled out. But you'll need to feed to insure the frames get drawn.

Re: Bees swarm 4 days after installation.

I shake all my packages into nucs. I find the bees build better in them and it's only a couple weeks until you need to move them to a 10 frame hive or add another box to the nuc.

Re: Electric netting fence for bears

    so far

I spray the fence line with Roundup. Keeps it free of weeds and much easier than trimming.

I use it in 3 yards.
  10. Re: Novice beek in Eastern MA: Hive died over winter

I start a few every year. I treat every August with OAV if the counts warrant. Most packages have enough mites to exceed my threshold, which is pretty low.

    Re: Wax Moth Question

You can also mist with acetic acid. Kills wax moths and repels them.

    Re: Indoor wintering

I've been toying around with the idea of indoor wintering. Followed Ian's posts and have read pretty extensively. There is a lot to it. And down here we would need AC as well as heat because of our...

Re: What's wrong with my brood?

just because you don't see them, they are there. You need to treat ASAP or you'll lose the hive. MAQS or oxalic vapor 3X once a week would be my choice.

Re: Pollen in a brand new hive?

some are building comb and the foragers are bringing in pollen for the eggs when the queen starts laying.

    Re: preventive nosema treatment?

I agree with Ian. If you're seeing dysentery it's probably not nosema. I never use fumagilin, but I also have little nosema. Send some bees to Beltsville if you don't have a scope. It's free.

  17. Re: Fungicide Spraying During the Day While Bees are Flying

    I agree, hives go downhill.

Get a written contract that specifies no spraying while the bees are in the field. You're correct to be concerned IMO.

    Re: Started fogging today.

I advocate and use 4 treatments a week apart. I do it here in MA in August in order to have strong winter bees.

I would mist with acetic acid - it kills nosema and kills and repels wax moths. You're far south of me and I'm seeing wax moths already. There may be eggs in the combs and a package is often not...

    Re: Dandelion spray

My to my neighbor's consternation I refuse to mow my lawn until the flowers in it have seeded, including the dandelions. My wife doesn't care for it either. Sometimes you have to go against the grain.
