    Re: Queen Excluder

My limited experience agrees. My bees had no problem storing honey through an excluder last year. Would they have stored more honey without an excluder? I don't know. My hive was very low on...

This makes the most sense to me.

Re: Privett Bloom, Good Early Harvest

Wow, I wish I could get that much honey. I thought I was good with 2 1/2 pounds off of 1 hive last year. Dang drought.
  5. Re: New Beekeeper; First Sting; Did I do something wrong?

All the Benadryl did for me was put me to sleep. Ice worked the best. Swelling peaks in the 24-48 hour range, then it starts going down.
  6. Re: New Beekeeper; First Sting; Did I do something wrong?

By tomorrow, your boyfriend will know you were stung. I got stung last week one the eye lid and my eye was swollen shut the next day. (Went by m hive when I had just split them, and 1 hive is queen...

    Re: Uncapped Honey

You can freeze uncapped honey. I had 2 frames that were partially capped. I froze the through winter and once thawed, put them back on the hive for them to finish.

Re: Hanging Bee Hive for Non-Keepers

I've seen hanging Mason bee "hives". Basically a structure with small tubes in it.
  10. Re: Benefits from splitting double deep into two singles?

I split mine Sunday as well, my first split. I'll be gone this weekend but will be checking for queen cells when I get back. Both had fresh eggs, as I couldn't find the queen. I now know which box...

Re: When to throw in throw towel?

I'm curious here, and hopefully one of you can explain. I've been reading with a laying worker, you don't want to add a queen because the laying worker will kill the queen. So what makes the laying...

Re: First split, hope I didn't screw it up.

My hive is also in it's 3rd year (my first year hive I lost their first winter) and the population was really high. I didn't want to take the chance of losing them to a swarm, so I figured a split...

Re: First split, hope I didn't screw it up.

Evidently they are not very happy with me. I went up to watch them, and I noticed a bee caught in a spider web. So I freed her and put her on the landing board. One of her friends nailed me in the...

First split, hope I didn't screw it up.

My hive population was really high, so I did a walkaway split on it today. This was when I started, after pulling off the super. (I know, I should have done it before adding the super but I kept...

Re: What made you decide to keep bees?

I got my bees for pollination of our fruit trees. Some friends of ours had bees, and said their fruit trees exploded with fruit when they got bees. I didn't give honey much of a thought. Now I'm...

This intrigues me. My bees do not fill a super that quickly.

    Re: New beek here!

Your fruit trees will explode with fruit. We also got bees primarily for pollination, and my trees have so much fruit now that I really have to thin them so the branches don't break.

Re: How many bee hives do you have?

I'm feeling way behind here. I have 1 hive, planning to split my hive for a 2nd this weekend. Definitely a hobbyist.

I can see that bee hives multiply like chickens. I started with 7 chickens 6...
  23. Re: Queen egg laying question / first inspection

From my limited experience, everything sounds normal. They may not be taking the syrup because they are finding nectar elsewhere. I'm not sure where you are in CA, but here, the blackberries are in...
  24. Re: Anybody Keeping Bees in Lake Tahoe/Sierras?

This year, it started in January with the Manzanita blooming. I believe the flow goes until early September-ish, ending with star thistle and rosemary. I'm at 2,600 feet and still pretty new to...
  25. Re: Anybody Keeping Bees in Lake Tahoe/Sierras?

I'm not that high up, but I've seen hives outside of Portola at roughly that elevation.
