    Re: Discouraged in Florida.

I think if you are going to treat, OAV is the way to go. I bought two from SNL, and like the more expensive model a lot better. I think it will last forever. Spend the cost on the tool upfront...

    Re: 3 or 4 mediums?

I use 3 for the brood chamber, rarely do I have a queen lay in a frame on the 4th, but it does happen. I don't use excluders.
  3. Re: Any theories on why there is such a discrepancy between mating success

I lose about 50% of mine coming from my full size hives, or nucs where I've moved cells to. I'm going to try grafting this weekend, and I'm going to MOVE all the nucs away from the main hives by...

    Re: Discouraged in Florida.

I am not treatment free, but I didn't treat as aggressively going into fall. And I'm with you on the neglect leading to massive swarming. I lost 3 full hives, two dead coming out of winter, 1 more...

Re: Why aren't Cloake Boards more popular?

I think it's because most people don't understand what they do or how they do it. I was getting ready to build a cell builder and was doing research and finally found a PDF that gave a one page...

Re: For those who use the Testors paint pen..

I've tried about 10 different kinds, but mine are always at risk. I think I'm too slow and keep them out of the hive too long. I finally decided NOT to mark. Losing queens is way worse than not...
  7. Introducing queens in various configurations....

I'm trying to raise queens via grafting this week. I would like some advice on introducing queens to hives.
I would prefer to introduce mated queens from mating nucs, via the usual cage with candy...

    Re: Queen breeding question

That may not be a good plan, I've read that queens will fly nearly twice as far as drones will, to insure they are not inbreeding. If you move your nucs a mile, you may have moved it far enough to...

    Re: Why Beekeep?

Well, as a sort of, almost prepper, Hives can/could provide and amazing source of calories. You can put honey on ANYTHING and it's better, you can drink it in tea, you can store it without...

What do you feed a cell building colony?

What do you feed a cell building colony?

I've read that you should feed a cell building colony unless there is a strong flow.
What should you feed? 1:1 2:1 or 3:5 that I usually feed, when I do...

    Re: Started fogging today.

I reduced my OAV to a single fall treatment after most of the brood was gone. Had my first winter loses, which may or may not have had anything to do with the reduced OAV treatments.
    Still, I will...

Re: Standardization from the start - all mediums

I broke all my deep hives down so I only had a single deep as the bottom brood box. That way I rarely, if ever, have to pick it up. When I loose a hive, or it turns laying worker, I break the...

Re: Standardization from the start - all mediums

I don't get rid of my deeps unless the hive fails and I use the deep as the bottom broad box. I did find a guy that will sell me Medium Nucs, thou I rarely buy bees anymore. I've got old deep...
  14. Re: Can you combine a laying worker with a queen right hive?

Yes sir, a nuc is a beautiful thing, but I've only got two, and neither are build up enough to steal from yet.
  15. Re: Can you combine a laying worker with a queen right hive?

I've done it twice, without moving/removing the hive. Both times the laying worker returned to the hive. Since then I've removed the hive, Just hated to do it again, but I'm not willing to commit...
  16. Re: Anyone else in Central Florida not seeing a nectar flow yet?

NW Florida, I've had a very week flow this year, it started early and is in a real slump. Robbing is rampant, lost two good hives to robbing already. Lots of bees, but not much for them to bring...
  17. Re: Can you combine a laying worker with a queen right hive?

Nope, the laying worker will fly right back to the hive with the rest of the bees. FlowerPlanter's link to Bush's layingworker list was very informative. I think I'm back to shaking them out and ...
  18. Can you combine a laying worker with a queen right hive?

I've shaken laying worker hives out, and I feel bad when the girls come home and there is no hive there. I've seen them sit there for days... I've also provided frames of open broad and had them...

Re: Beesource - What's it good for?

I love to read Beesource, I learn something new all the time. I love to read Michael Bush's responses in particular, but I'm not TF. Michael has a great bedside manner for us novices and...

Re: Would two queens ever coexist in one hive?

Absolutely, I've had 4 hives with two queens that I know of, and I don't have a lot of years experience or a lot of hives. In 3 of the 4 cases, I discovered the second queen because I picked the...

Re: OAV treating a newly hived swarm

I often use OAV during spring build up, before supers are added, to get the mite load down. Then, treat several times during the dearth, after the supers are off.
  23. I have a queenless hive can I use it to raise cells?

I want to try grafting this week, and I've read about people building starter boxes and locking bees inside with sponges for water and all kinds of stuff that seems extreme to me.
    I would think that...

  25. Re: Is it safe to combine a very weak queen right nuc

Interesting Idea, I've got several with screened bottom boards. Simply remove the top and set them on top of the other hive with the SBB between. When I'm ready to combine, remove the SBB. ...
