    Food grade diatomaceous earth

I'm looking to get some food grade diatomaceous earth for the household and figured I should just get enough to use around the hives as well.

    Where is everyone getting theirs?
  2. Re: What size rubber bands would be best for medium frames?

    Interesting concept.

No issues with bees getting stuck to it? Wouldn't want it to become like fly paper for the bees.
  3. What size rubber bands would be best for medium frames?

About to do another cut out and man we just can't seem to get the right rubber bands.

I'm about to order some from Amazon and I can get the exact size... IF I knew what size would be best.
  4. Re: What is this? (greasy? stuff on ground in front of hive)

There was a few bumble/carpenter bees and wasps (paper and red) buzzing around the hive the other day... it was odd to see so many around just this hive. Maybe it is a mouse down there.

    Oh, and...
  5. Re: What is this? (greasy? stuff on ground in front of hive)

Good call, yes screen bottom board.

The whole "apiary" needs to be completely torn down and set back up... it's terrible... you would swear it's abandoned. We just started getting swarm calls...
  6. What is this? (greasy? stuff on ground in front of hive)

Went out the other day and was looking at the hives... it's been WAY too long since I've looked inside them but weather and life isn't cooperating recently.

I did notice an odd substance at the...
  7. Re: What happens to the bees left behind after a cut out.

I guess I'm also curious as to the "why"?
  8. What happens to the bees left behind after a cut out.

Obviously you can't get them all.

So, like this cut out we did the other day in a shed. I went back the next evening and there were a couple of hundred bees hanging out, confused just buzzing...
  9. Re: What do you use for your tools at the bee yard?

What is this? I need a smoker box to snuff out my smoker when I'm done. I put it in a galvanized bucket in the middle of my shop so it's "safe" but I'd rather an air tight container.
  10. Re: 4 lb package of honeybees arrives and 90% dead!

Wow man, that sucks! Some one is screwing the pooch at USPS it seems.

    Re: A Swarm denied...

You don't, unless you are run by a corporate overlord that says you do.
  12. Re: Charge for placing a hive at someone's garden?

With that kind of deal, you might have a few members from here lined up to get you to put bees at their place. $200 bees with lifetime replacement guarantee and half the honey and zero maintenance!

    Re: A Swarm denied...

That's certainly what I took away from it. Lots of those cases, I never knew the facts. The media is too busy guiding our opinion or sensationalizing things to give you all the facts.

    Re: Alternatives to Smoke

Right... so if you are concerned about the taste... then do a blind study.

Smoke more than you would normally smoke one hive and don't smoke the hive next to it. With in reason, don't suffocate...

    Re: Alternatives to Smoke

I guess you are losing everyone on the bigger question of.

    Why not smoke them?

I think we are asking this question of you at this point. :lookout:

    Re: Alternatives to Smoke

You led into this entire discussion based on "you don't want to use smoke because it makes your honey taste different"... if that is your ONLY reason for not using smoke and it is proven to be a moot...
  17. Re: How Long for a Queen to Start Laying on New Foudationless?

I did a tree rescue, but put them in a box with no comb/foundation... just frames.

She must have started laying IMMEDIATELY WHILE they were drawing out the cells. I had capped brood on the 8th...

Re: What happened to this little guy?

Well, F*CK... let me take that back.

I apparently shouldn't trust my "glances with the naked eye".

I have a mite on this very bee... it's actually quite obvious once I saw it... but yet I have...

Re: What happened to this little guy?

I'll admit I haven't done any sort of real check.

But I have never seen a mite on a bee.

I do have a SBB... Just need to slip in the oil board I guess.

Re: Would you send it back?

Daniel, I guess my thoughts on this would be. Do you think this would be the one they would put out on the floor as their "demo". If not, then is it what they should put in the customer's hand...

Not to get political... but I watched this recently and it certainly opened my eyes to this sort of thinking.

What happened to this little guy?

I was inspecting my hives real quick this morning and in my strongest hive I came across this little guy walking around the tops of the frames.

Is this possibly normal? If not, what is possibly...

  24. Re: Microphones for sound recordings in hives.

In that time frame his mics will be fine.

He can put what he wants in there.

Days now, would be a different story. :)

Re: All the talk about "Flow" huh?

    Hey man... same here.

Tallows are pointing up right now (well, as of yesterday when the baby and I went pick black berries). Hoping to see some significant changes in the next week or so!
