We have a fence of the same design as riverbee mentioned. We started our first wire 4" off the ground, then alternated hot, grounded, hot, grounded... all the way up every 6 inches. This helps...
I'm preparing for hives in the spring, and my vote is all mediums. Only problem is many times nucs use deep frames :(. Still trying to figure out how to make that transition as smooth as possible.

Is that using an electric winch? It's hard to tell. I'm getting ideas...
Do you 'paint' it on or let it soak in? It seems like you would get more penetration into the grain if it could be soaked.
