    to much wax

I'm a novice at queen raising. I grafted 15 larva into cups and put them in the cell starter. After 1 day I moved the cells to a finisher. It looked like 11 of the 15 had been accepted by the...

    emergency queens

I have a couple of queenless hives and i thought that I would graft some young larva from another hive into queen cups and put them in. I did so, but in both hives the bees cleaned out the cups and...
  4. Re: Will a virgin queen lay before taking a mating flight?

How long do you think "eventually" is?
  5. Will a virgin queen lay before taking a mating flight?

The weather has been awful here preventing most flying. I'm wondering if a virgin will start to lay if she can't get out to mate.

Re: Shook swarm split from TBH to lang

I've done splits that way with good success. In fact, I don't tend to add brood frames hoping to cause a break in the mite breeding cycle.

Re: Feeding / Harvesting in a tbh

I guess I never gave that any thought, I just take honey as the hive fills up. I leave the honey next to the brood nest for the bees but I don't worry about the source of the honey. Why is this a...

Re: 3 Foot or 4 Foot

My first hive was 3 foot but they filled it up the first season. All of mine are now 4'. It makes more efficient use of the dimension lumber also.

    Re: Modified Langstroth hive?

I did exactly what you are talking about with a half dozen of my langstroth hives last fall. I first started out making screened top feeders ala Lauri Miller. It then occurred to me that I could...

Moving from a Warre to a Lang or top bar.

I've had a Waare in my back yard for 6 or 7 years and have decided it doesn't work for me. I have been trying to get them to move into a langstroh box by putting it on the bottom and putting an...

Re: Bought a Used TBH - Cleanup Options?

I would set the body out in the sun for a couple of days and definitely make new top bars. they are to easy to make to take the risk of introducing something bad into the hive.
  12. Re: Natural vs. black Rite cell or Plasticell foundation

    Lauri, those are great pictures!
  13. Re: Natural vs. black Rite cell or Plasticell foundation

I've used both and don't see much difference at all. The bees don't seem to care.

    Re: Hive Size, how big?

I started off with 36" hives but they filled up to quickly and swarmed on me. In later versions I've made them 48" so I can use dimension lumber and that length seems to work ok.

    Cloake board capacity

What is the thinking on the maximum, or proper number of queens to attempt to start using the cloake board method. I've heard 5 but I'd like others experience with this method.

    Re: 200 MICRON Filter

I've had better luck with the fine filters if I soak them in water before I try to strain the honey. Much below 85 degrees and it won't move well at all. you can help by putting a clean glass plate...

queen rearing in a top bar hive

I posted this in the top bar forum also.

I've never raised queens in a top bar before so I have a fairly simple question, I think. In my langstroth hives I put a queen excluder on to keep the...
