Re: Hive check time. 15 degrees though.

My bees are a bit unusual. They will not respond to a rap on the side of the box. Maybe a few hives will, but not most.

    Re: Maple flow

The maple flow can be impressive. We have a giant maple in our yard. Not sure if it is a "red" or other soft maple. Before I had bees it would be covered from top to bottom with honey bees. You...

    Re: carniolan bee cluster ??

Are you sure you won't have nectar until April? We are zone 6, soft maple should bloom mid to late Feb. That is our first "major" flow. My apologies for the slightly OT post.

    Unless I was 100%...

    Green with envy. :D

Just finished making some sugar patties. Plan on putting them on between cold snaps.

I think out warm winter has caused the bees to burn through stores faster than...

Re: What is your favorite hive configuration?

My favorite hive configuration is any properly sized equipment that I can put bees in. I don't worry too much about the config. As long as it is appropriate to the size of the colony.

    Re: book recommendations

Michael Bush's book "The Practical Beekeeper" is one of my favorites. Mel's book on the OTS method is a great read as well.

    Re: Bees Changing Homes

We have noticed similar events in the past. Of course we could not prove the bees changed homes. The evidence did point that way.

  9. Re: Cluster is at the top of the hive (TN) Winter post

We have had bees stay in the top box most of the winter as well. Still makes me worried when I see it.

Re: Feeding honey back to the bees

You can put the honey below the brood chamber of another colony. I would not use the queen excluder. If you have a queen excluder, the cluster could possibly move down and leave the queen above the...

Re: Recommendations for bee plants in NC

More details would be helpful. Type of landscape? How big of an area? Trees? What is your goal with the planting? So many variables. What I would suggest is plantings that would fill dearths. ...

Re: House Construction and my Bees

My educated guess is no. Newly established hives tend to be much less defensive than established colonies. The entrance to the hive should be facing away. This means no one should be in the flight...

    Re: Artic blast

During prolonged periods of bitter cold/high winds, we would move our smallest colonies inside an unheated garage. Just in case we block off the windows to keep it dark. These tiny colonies have...

We have already reduced entrances and closed screened bottoms off. One additional thing we did is move some small nucs from a higher elevation to a warmer location. This warmer location happens to...

Poor Valley Bee Farm is about 30 minutes from our house. John Rhoton, the owner, is a stand up guy, top notch person. I have no doubt he will make your order right.

    Re: Overwintering Mediums

    My bad,

That should have read "Colonies that outgrow an eight frame medium, but are not strong enough to fill out an eight over eight medium, we have put in a 10 frame medium."

    In colonies that...

    Re: Bear in the yard...

Absolutely agree. We have a bear fence. We also keep a 12 ga shotgun loaded with slugs by the door. Black bears are a scourge. A friend's apiary was wiped out earlier this year. Our apiary was...

    Re: Overwintering Mediums

    1. Our mountain climate is a lot cooler than yours. We can easily overwinter an eight frame medium.
    2. Two eight frame mediums is a very good option as well.

Re: If you're in my shoes what will you do?

I agree with Eduardo. It is not uncommon for bees to supercede introduced queens. Only two queen cells points to a supercedure.
