Re: Escape Boards - sensational - NEW

Ooooh, put me in for fifty large for a prototype. We'll put a mini camera in the hive and take bets on how quick they'll propolize the moving parts shut.:D
  2. Re: Serious Concern - capped honey has black blotches in it

The OP said to look in the upper right, I thought it was those two cells. If it's the cappings over all, it's normal sealed comb that's been traveled on. If some are lighter than others, might be a...
  3. Re: Serious Concern - capped honey has black blotches in it

Take a toothpick and see if there's anything in it, I've seen old comb where the bees have propolized the cells shut.

Re: Shaking in nurse bees from another hive.

You can use a pc of plywood under the bottom board to make a ramp if you need to. Just get the majority of the bees on the bottom board so the rest can follow in.

Re: Shaking in nurse bees from another hive.

Rig it up so you can shake them onto the bottom board ( I have a piece of metal that I can clip onto the bottom board), the older bees fly back and the nurse bees scoot into the nuc.

Re: Splits -Tips for Finding the Queen

Have you ever seen one of those pictures where you see one thing at first and then another thing by changing your focus? My method is to scan the frame for the one bee that is different. Usually...
  7. Re: On splits - Take the old queen or leave her in the original hive?

I take the queen, but I'm following the OTS guidelines for cell production. The theory is a nuc doesn't/may not have the resources to raise quality q cells.

    Re: Inner Covers

Try it, beeks in Germany don't use inner covers and put wax paper down. I've never had much of a problem with my nuc boxes, but the bees aren't in there for a month or so.

Re: Splits -Tips for Finding the Queen

Take two frames out (making sure she's not on them), then spread the rest out. As you pull the frames scan the frame that's in the box ( try to have the sun to your back), while doing that hold the...

Re: Anyone use Dadant's "economy" frames?

Have never used them, but with the caveat " knots and splits allowed" do you really want to deal with a failed frame when it's full of brood and or honey? On the flip side you only need 50 so you can...

Re: Rain barrel waters for bees

Considering that bees make a regular habit of gathering water out of mud puddles and worse, I don't think rainwater is a danger. I mix in some livestock mineral salt to 5 gal of water to call them to...

Re: HOW BEST TO HIVE THREE NEW NUCS

Ya, you keep one as a nuc and your asking for a swarm (just ask me how I know), hive all three and evaluate if you must, but only after a couple months unless something is in drastic condition. You...

Re: Why isn't she being attacked??

I'm wondering if she's going to post a vid of her hive getting robbed out after she does her thing in a dearth and the neighbors come over for the banquet.
Course by then she'll have gotten tagged...
  14. Re: How much night light (security light) is bad for a hive?

If it was me I'd spot the hives so they're facing away from the light. If you have trouble, put up a section of stockade fence between the hives and the light.

Re: Bees like sugar more than honey?

Bees are big time horders, if the honey's capped they'll go after sugar anyday.

Re: Need Help! Just Inhereted 50 hives

As long as it doesn't get over 100 degrees you shouldn't have to worry. The extra bees have left the comb area for ventilation purposes. We call it bearding, nothing unusual. Just make sure there's...

  20. Re: Unfortunately starting over with a step ahead

I can be a poster child for all of what's being described. I'm still trying to wrap my head around what has transpired, booming/bees packed in the boxes/more than enough honey to last em thru the...

Re: New Dadant Smoker.....inlet tube issue??

Get too much air going into the burn chamber when the bellow gets pumped = burning embers= burnt bee wings and if it's dry enough a brush fire. I got mine used 6 years ago, the gap might be a little...

I start with cedar shavings, tried the wood pellets last year, had creosote running down the outside of the smoker, wasn't the most pleasant smoke to work with either. Maybe the brand of pellets,...

Maybe they never completely shut down brooding and they're lucky you had the foresight to feed them.
