    Re: Cypress Hives

The Kelley cypress woodenware is nice. I've not seen any real defects and the grade is very clear. I just use tung oil on mine.

    Re: Ultimate In-Hive Feeders

I've got two of them and they really are great from the bee perspective. No drowners and no leakage, but they take a little more regular maintenance than other feeders. The syrup container has...

    Re: “Single-hive” honey?

Yes, I think there are rewards to it. Having only my backyard hives, I decided to taste each frame this year prior to extraction and there was quite an incredible variety between frames. I've got...

Point well taken. I wouldn't do it without permission.

I'd love to do that across the street in our local hay fields.

    Re: Mann Lake's Bee Patties

It could be that the hive not taking the patty at the moment, is getting their fill of pollen right now. I've noticed the girls are bringing in a lot more pollen these past couple of weeks.

    I've...

    Re: Smoker Plug

I use a champagne cork in mine. It doesn't insert into the smoker, but I just kind of screwed it onto the end. Now that it's got the 'ring' cut into it, it holds well. I've had the same cork for...

I think the management of the company is in flux right now. My past experiences have all been great, but like many of you are reporting, transactions this year have been interesting to poor. I've...

    Re: Mark's new Honey Label

You never know how marketing like this will go down, some people might see the novelty in it, while others pass for some less "subversive" looking honey. Personally, I kind of like the "Eat my honey...

    Great video Charlie. Very interesting.

Out of curiosity, there were a number of bees falling off comb, were there a pile of casualties to correspond?

    Re: Uncapping roller...do they work?

I just used mine today for the first time and I'd have to say it's not that bad. As folks have already mentioned, it doesn have a tendency to load up. While it's easily cleared, I could tell how it...
  15. Re: Stupid question: how many beekeepers are scared of bees?

I can relate to this thread a little. I've always had an irrational fear of spiders so about 12 years ago I bought a tarantula thinking that the care of it might eventually desensitize me to that...

Re: Yuba/Sutter CA I need boxes

    Hi Katie,
You might want to approach one of the larger apiaries (Strachan Apiares, YC) to see if they might donate a couple of complete hives.

Another option for Woodenware might be Mann Lake in...

Re: water seal instead of paint

I've used tung oil straight as well as tung oil cut with citrus solvent both to very good effect. It's a completely safe treatment for the wood and the bees.

Interesting. I've only checkerboarded new foundationless frames with either frames with drawn comb or with wax foundation. I will be curious as to what you find in a week or two.

I started using them last year and I will say that it noticeably reduced afternoon bearding on hot days. It supposedly encourages increased laying in the lower box.
