Re: growing brood nest no stores

I have three 4" hives that were brand new this year all started from swarms and every one filled up all but a few bars with brood comb. This is my first year also so I don't know if that's normal or...
  2. Re: When should I start seeing full bars of honey comb?

I have two side entrances open. That day got up to around 90 degrees I believe. Thanks for the tips.
  3. Re: When should I start seeing full bars of honey comb?

drlonzo: Thanks for the quick reply! Here's some pictures to give you an idea. They are built to Les Crowder specs except a bit longer (48" rather than 44").

  4. When should I start seeing full bars of honey comb?

I hived three swarms between 6 and 8 weeks ago. One of them already filled almost all their hive with brood comb and started swarm cells so I split them last week. The other two have filled over half...

Booming Hive - Do I need to split?

I have a hive that started as a swarm 5 weeks ago. I put them into a brand new hive with no existing comb. It has exploded in population and built lots of comb. I used Les Crowder's plan to build my...

    Brood pattern pictures

We just did our second inspection on a colony that we captured as a swarm 13 days ago. I think that everything looks great but was wondering if some experts would take a look. Specifically wondering...

    Moving newly hived swarm

Last Saturday I caught my first swarm which was good sized and filled my 10 bar (Les Crowder sized) nuc. And when I say filled, I mean that when the weather is warm, and they are festooning they fill...
  11. Re: How much syrup should a new package consume?

Doesn't matter much now since they absconded yesterday afternoon. :( So discouraging!

They left about 3 inches of comb on one bar. A few cells had pollen and almost every other had an egg in it....
  12. Re: How much syrup should a new package consume?

It's been getting up to 70 degrees during the day. Is that warm enough? I see a few bees going over to that side of the follower board. Just none drinking that I can see.

    I'm worried about...

Re: Bee Intallation, can it be this easy?

I installed my first package yesterday and shook them according to instructions on Michael Bush's website. It was quick and easy and SO fun! I wore a veil but no gloves and didn't get stung. An...
  14. How much syrup should a new package consume?

I just installed a new package yesterday and put a gallon baggie in the bottom with a few slits in the top of 5/3 ratio sugar water. It's on the other side of the follower board with a single 1" hole...

Re: How to build cheap top bars.

I plan on milling all of mine at 1 1/4" and then using 1/4" spacers in the honey comb. Any disadvantages to this solution?

Re: How to build cheap top bars.

These prototypes where made from 2 by 2's. I plan to make the rest from 2 by 6's or 2 x 8's so that I can cut off the ends all at the same time and then rip them to 1 1/4". Lot's of fun!

    How to add Observation Windows

Anyone have good plans that show how to add an observation window? I'm struggling with how to make it all work without affecting the internal dimensions of the hive with the glass or clips.

    Thanks!

    Re: Winter in Michigan

Thanks, for the tip but I'm still having trouble picturing how it works. Wouldn't the top cover (lid) cover up a gap in between the bars?
