    Transfering to larger hive

I need to transfer one of my hives to a bigger hive and I am not sure what the best way to do it is. The new hive is going to be in the same spot as the little hive. The spot has a tree limb that...

Re: Bee explosion and utter mess!

What kind of bars do you have? Mine build perfectly, unbelievably straight comb. I have 2 hives, both using wedge bars.
  3. Re: Bees from pouring out between the frames on inspection - cannot close gaps

If you lightly bump the bees between the bar they will move. You can also push the bars together so only one bee can fit between and then use something about 1/8" thick like a rod or yard stick. push...

    Re: Are these swarm cells?

I checked last night through the window and it looks like they are gone. There were a bunch of bees so I'm not 100% positive though.

    Re: Are these swarm cells?

I did not notice anything inside any of the 3 cups but I will keep an eye on them. If I do find them capped what should my next step be?

    Re: Are these swarm cells?

No that is not a capped cell. I think they are just festooning there.

I have been putting empty bars between fully drawn comb. Is that what you mean? they have 2 empty bars in the nest right now...

    Are these swarm cells?

I am kind of stumped about this. I have been keeping plenty of bars in the brood chamber and there are 4 or 5 bars past the last built comb.

    Re: olive oil

Tung oil is a great oil to mix with beeswax. I get the stuff sold on Amazon in the can with the green label.

    Re: Caught my first swarm!

This is all scrap left over form concrete work. The drum sander cleans it up really well.

Alright I went through this hive yesterday since I am going to be out of town for a few days for work....

    Re: first successful install

How long do the bees stay in the hive before they go forage? We had a nice sunny day and most were still just festooning in the hive. They had completely built out the first inserted bar in the brood...

    Re: Caught my first swarm!

Alright I have just about finished the new hive. I just have the roof and the glass to go. This is a "scrap" hive like my last one, or to be trendy you could call it reclaimed...

    Re: first successful install

Alright things are still going good in hive #1. They don't seem to build as fast as some of you but they are making progress. About a week ago I noticed them building comb with much larger holes than...

Re: When is it OK to Peek?

I was only discussing a swarm, witch is what the OP said he/she had. A swarm has "packed their bags" and they are ready to make a go out of it. A package had there house stolen. They probably need a...

    Re: Wooohooo!! (Swarm capture)

Do you have little leprechauns that go around and kill queen bees? You are having the worst luck.

How much do you have invested so far?

Re: When is it OK to Peek?

Exactly. Check daily or at least every other day to make sure they are building straight comb. There are tons of posts on here from people who did not check enough.

And this is just my 2 cents...

    Re: Caught my first swarm!

Yeah the 19th is about when I expect to see some reinforcements. I experienced about the same thing with my first hive. They stalled out for a bit and then 2 weeks later they were booming.

    I did...

    Re: Caught my first swarm!

Alright I think this little hive is at a critical point. The population seems like it has dropped a good amount since I last got into the hive. They have about 4 bars about the size of the one below....

So you put them in the box and then left it there until dark? I never thought about doing that.

Re: What are these bees doing?

Nope this is my first hive, about 6 weeks old. It was not super warm out so I was not sure what was up.

Those are just beads left from the feeder. I need to get them out of there.
